Message preview bubble displays with incorrect charset

Description jem 2011-06-14 15:21:27 UTC
Version: 2.1.0 (using KDE 4.6.4)
OS: Linux

When hovering with the mouse over the message list a "tooltip" box appears. This box now also contains a short preview of the message. Non-ASCII characters are displayed as a black diamond with a question mark. This happens at least when the message contains Quoted Printable UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1 text.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Receive message containing accented characters or umlauts. Hover over the message line in the message list.

Actual Results:
Characters are displayed as black diamonds:
(Unicode "Replacement Character" 0xfffd)

Expected Results:
The characters should have been displayed correctly. Like this, for example: ä ö ü å é.

I can confirm this bug. But for me, this bug is related with Akonadi or Nepomuk since I've got the same problem for tags used in Dolphin. I use Arch package

I also have this problem.

I have attached two screenshots.
The tooltip shows the black diamond.
The content view is OK.

The short preview in the tooltip only appears after Nepomuk indexes the content of the mail.

It seems the tooltip always display the preview with the same encoding no matter the original email encoding. On my system, it seems the tooltip is always displayed with ISO-8859-1 encoding. My system uses only UTF-8, my locale is fr_FR.UTF-8.

When I import your email preview is ok.
So I don't know where is the pb

This bugs seems to affect many Arch Linux users (including me) using Virtuoso 6.1.3.

This bug seems to be related : https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=271664
Comment 9 Damien Gombault 2011-08-01 13:47:05 UTC
I have just downgraded to virtuoso 6.1.2 and receive two new mails.

The preview tooltip now shows the right accents in the two new mails.

The bug is not in KMail or Nepomuk but in virtuoso 6.1.3.

I think you can close this bug.
Comment 10 Laurent Montel 2011-08-01 14:30:58 UTC
I use 6.1.2 too.
So if it's a bug in virtuoso we can close it.

Message preview bubble displays with incorrect charset

Confirming this very bug is present in Ubuntu Oneiric Beta 2, latest updates installed on 2011/10/07, as described here : « Non-ASCII characters are displayed incorrectly in the tooltip message preview. » (see attached image, some personal information manually blurred) - seen on 2 different machines today.

Charset displayed incorrectly for accentuated chars in the message contents, but OK in subject and other parts of the preview bubble.

Which version of Virtuoso is provided by the latest Ubuntu updates?

Virtuoso 6.1.2 works
Virtuoso 6.1.3 doesn't work
Virtuoso 6.1.3 + this patch works: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=271664#c13

If Ubuntu ships only 6.1.3 without the patch, it is very important to open a bug in Launchpad, to make sure either 6.1.2 or 6.1.3 + patch is shipped with Ubuntu.
Otherwise it might break a lot of things (this doesn't only cause the KMail issue described here).
