Version:           2.0.1 (using KDE 4.5.3) 
OS:                Linux

This system is openSuSE 11.4 with K3B 2.0.1 and a known to work DVD/CD.
I set /dev/sr0 to 755 as a check  There is a clean CD in the drive.
KDE4/5 /K3B can't find the CD s /dev/sr0 or /dev/cdrom (a link)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
start X execute K3B chose a file.iso and as requested insert a blank CD.
it never selects the drive as it did before.  It just dies and never sekects the CD or errors out

Expected Results:  
It should state it found the CD/DVD drive and light up the start button

OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.36-18 (local compile from /proc/config.gz) and the DVD default 2.6.36-18-default 
/dev/sr0 is set to 755 grp cdrom/ /dev/cdrom is a link root.root 
Compiler: gcc  gcc-4.5-8.14.i586

Is the hal daemon running? If not, make sure it is.

You may have hit it.  I checked "ps" looking for hal - nothing found.
I used yast2 and reloaded them and checked /etc/init.d.

You found it!  There start script is the problem.
