Device notifiers background broken

Version: unspecified
OS: Linux

Since there was an update a few days ago, my device notifier is broken somehow.

There are different states that evolve:
Sometimes its icon is just plain (so there is space reserved for the notifier icon but just empty) in systray. I cannot click on it. If I plug in a device, its menu opens and I can click on items inside but I cannot trigger it once it closes. If I hide device notifier, in the system tray popup it states “No devices connected” as name and I cannot click on it either.

Sometimes it works fine, so the icons appear, it turns into an exclamation mark when there is something that requires attention but its background is broken (see attachment).
The area that is visible on that panel is the left top area of my desktop (the folders are on the top left area of my desktop).

Autohiding works just fine, though. If there is something connected it is visible, if there are none, then it‘s in system tray popup.

But I cannot reliably confirm this bug, it happens sometimes. When I restart plasma it seems to be fine. I will do some further researches whether it is always broken when I first start my computer or if it just happens rarely.

Reproducible: Sometimes

can you give us some updates? can you still reproduce?
Comment 2 Kai Uwe Broulik 2010-12-25 15:34:21 UTC
Just updated to KDE 4.6 RC 1 and still valid for my main machine. Couldn‘t reproduce it on any other machine (neither my notebook, nor mum‘s computer, nor my external hdd kubuntu). Maybe some broken configuration? But I already purged my plasma-rc files.
But it seems now it is *always* broken. So I just plugged in a USB stick, an empty tray icon appears (the device manager), clicking it does nothing, and when it automatically opens (i.e. on plugging in a device) the ugly menu described appears.
Comment 3 Hans-Rudi Denzler 2010-12-27 17:14:32 UTC
Neither the USB-stick nor the external 40GB Iomega HDD (IEEE-1394 Fire Wire) are recognized anymore (since RC 1). Manual mounting is still possible.

# fdisk -ul
...
Gerät boot. Anfang Ende Blöcke Id System
/dev/sdd1 56 510551 255248 83 Linux

Gerät boot. Anfang Ende Blöcke Id System
/dev/sde1 63 39198599 19599268+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sde2 39198600 78140159 19470780 83 Linux

Manual mounting:
# mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt/
# umount /mnt/
Comment 5 Kai Uwe Broulik 2010-12-27 18:23:11 UTC
Okay so it isn‘t my fault that my Android phone is no longer recognizes on both my notebook and computer (both running 4.6 RC1). My 1GB USB stick is recognized though

That's unrelated, please file a bug for the component solid/backend-udisks

Can you post a screenshot with the empty icon? thanks
Comment 9 Alvaro Carroz 2011-01-09 17:28:12 UTC
Just upgraded to 4.5.5 and the problem is gone. No more ugly and misplaced device notifier.

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 with an Nvidia card.
Comment 10 Kai Uwe Broulik 2011-01-09 17:30:52 UTC
Hm, I still got it with KDE 4.6 RC2 but I think my installation is pretty broken, I‘ll re-install Kubuntu altogether once I got my SSD.

Once more, could you please post screenshots of the different stages?
Also, if you could also attach a screenshot of dolphin showing the devices, it would be great to understand what there /should/ be shown in the notifier

Thanks

Really weird stuff

The device notifier icons gets placed on the left of the primary screen, device notifier‘s background gets copied from another area…

Excellent screenshot! Thanks a bunch!

This really looks like #261479, what do you think mart?
