I retested this today and it worked a lot better. I was able to write emails, to browse between folders in the folder view and to open and close tabs while the Imap resource was syncing. So I am closing this bug. I retested this bug today and I am reopening it since doing anything else while syncing the shared folders (server side subscription disabled) is nearly impossible because of how slow the N900 reacts. I guess there is a jugement call to be made on whether this is acceptable or not. Till what do you think? Note: this test was made with 'Enable Serverside Subscription' checked.
