What I was doing when the application crashed:
With private ATI drivers it worked. Now with x11-video-fglrxG01-8.593-27.1.i586 it crashes

more recent versions have a check around this, you however won't be able to use (OpenGL) compositing anyway with this driver.

drop fglrx, use radeon/hd - if you can.
