Starting up Kubuntu 10.10. AFAIK this only happens after a normal boot, not after logging out and in again and not after reboot (?).

I had the same crash at login (same backtrace) on my laptop with Kubuntu 10.10 upgraded from 10.04
The crash disappeared after disabling the Network Management applet in system tray.
Also now re-enabling the network manager, the crash doesn't appear, so it might be some wrong setting from the old version of the network manager.

Please, disregard my previous comment, because it was completely wrong.
Actually the crash happens only at the first login after boot, logging out and back in doesn't cause the crash.

I have 2 system trays with different items categories and extra items.
I found that the crash disappears if I remove the second system tray and move the categories and extra items in the first one.
I also tested it on another pc with Kubuntu 10.10 + KDE 4.6 beta2 installed and the crash appeared when I added a second system tray with a few items and disappeared when I removed it.

I still cannot identify an item that causes the crash but I cannot exclude it because I didn't try to remove them one by one, so it might be a bug in the system tray or in just one item.

Is anyone else affected by this bug using 2 system trays? Maybe it's not just one bug...

Also, I found that it's not true that it only happens only at first login after boot, it seems to disappear randomly after a few times, sometimes just after one, more often after several (yeah, that's weird)

looks like one of the system tray layout bugs, seems fairly exclusive to 4.5.1.
several fixes went in since then; closing for now, can re-open if we get new
reports with >=4.6.0

I have updated to KDE SC 4.6.0 and for me Plasma still crashes on login. I can attach a new backtrace if this is of any help.

Just like Daniele E. Domenichelli I have two systrays with different items in it (one with applications & messaging, one with the rest).

I can confirm it is still crashing on KDE SC 4.6...

Reopening, because we get several reports crashing with 4.6.2, see bug 271148. It isn't clear which widgets cause the crash, so if you can reproduce the crash, please try to find out which widget you need to remove.

At least for me, it seems to be related to having two separate system trays. I have experienced this bug until yesterday, when I decided that it was getting too annoying and I went back to one tray only. Now it is gone.

Same problem for me... like Christoph Feck I switched back to just one system tray, and now the problem is gone.

I'm not completely sure of this, but I think it could be related to the kde network manager, because IIRC on one laptop I had gnome network manager applet instead of kde network manager and even with 2 system trays it didn't crash...
Also even though I couldn't confirm it, I mentioned in a previous comment that removing the network manager applet the crash disappeared, so it might be something related.

1. Most of the time it crashes right after startup
2. I switched recently to KDE because of Gnome 3 became lame! 
   I was playing with the desktop, applets etc. to get it customized and discovered that plasma crashed regularly. Seeing the bug reports that are probably duplicates I guess I hit the already described 'common bug'. I hope this report helps.

From bug 282758 (KDE SC 4.6.0): "plasma crash after configuring systray options"

I have two control lines, one on top, one on the right side. At the right side
I have two systrays, one of them as standard, the second one (placed on near
top of screen) only for system messages. I added a third systray to the top
control panel (intention: to get a second kmix). So far everything OK.

Then trying to opt out everything but kmix. Clicking OK, plasma crashed.
systray was still present, but with all options on.

Following could be a reason:

I unselected ALL possible options in the check box list of messages in the
settings window. May be controling of at least ONE selected option as default
could help. It appeared, that the control panel was drawn without any symbol,
then was redrawn with the previously last single option activated.

Everytime on startup, I begin my work with kubuntu from sending krash report.

No reports from 4.7.4 or 4.8.x, so the change from Aaron for KDE 4.7.4 really fixed it. If you reopen a bug, make sure you have the version which includes the fixes.

I'm using OpenSUSE 12.1 and every time when it starts up,KDE crashes for about 1 to 5 seconds and then it goes on without any further problems

Reopening based on bug 309432, this still happens in KDE 4.9.2

Absolutely nothing we can do about this I'm afraid. It's a problem somewhere in QGraphicsView. This will magically resolve itself with the move to QML2 (which does not use QGraphicsView) so there is hope for the future :)
