When the KDE is loading and the splash screen is shown, a mouse click anywhere will make the splash screen disappear. It will not appear back no matter what, and KDE will proceed to show the Plasma desktop once it has finished loading.

Reported at bug 195979, fixed for KDE SC 4.5 (not backported yet)
