After posting this I remembered the BIOS option IDE/AHCI, so I changed SATA mode from AHCI to IDE and low and behold burning speed is up to 11x, so I guess I will leave it at that, unclear now to me if its a bios issue, linux kernel issue or k3b though Same problem on openSUSE 11.2 for x86_64. Used to burn DVD isos at 4x very quickly. Now - at 0.11x ...
