Configuring googletalk is kind of difficult in kopete, since you have to follow (and know about this guide)

pidgin has a separate entry for googletalk with all the correct settings already set up, I would suggest to create a seperate entry with correct port, server and other settings for googletalk and not lumping everything together under jabber
