Description D.J. Capelis 2009-07-17 17:45:28 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.3)
Compiler: gcc (Gentoo 4.3.3-r2 p1.1, pie-10.1.5) 4.3.3
OS: Linux
Installed from: Gentoo Packages

In KDE4, krunner gained a series of very nice plugins each of which tend to be triggered by a series of characters. However, it would be nice if the calculator plugin was able to be implicitly triggered without requiring an explicit '=' character. This is very much one of those nice magical features that makes the desktop just slightly easier (or less frustrating, depending on your perspective) to use.

For reference, the following interfaces support a similar type of feature:
KDE 3's krun.
Google's google search engine.
Apple's spotlight.

Unrelated bug genesis background: This bug report was one of the ones I distilled from a random comment[1] on one of the KDE blogs critiquing some elements of KDE4's user experience. I pulled this particular bit out as one of the more promising bits of critique as it has happened to annoy me too on occasion. I've noticed that for calculating the share of rent for each roomate in our house I switched from using krunner to bc because of this issue. I used to use krun.

If you can bring back the magic, I'd appreciate it. :)
