Should be fixed with r940069. If you are able to compile the svn source (see http://kile.sourceforge.net/developers.php#svn ), please do so and let us know if it fixes the problem for you. In the meantime, there is an option: Settings->Configure Kile...->LaTeX->General->Special Characters that you can disable in order to get the older functionality back (This should be turned off by default -- did something screwy happen with the kubuntu builds? I'll email the kubuntu contact on this so they can determine if this is worth a re-release of 2.1) Thanks for the report!
