root login is disabled by default. If you want to login as root, please check your system's kdmrc and check if it has AllowRootLogin=true re comment #2: it seems more complicated than that: - if i understand correctly, the root login through kdm does work sometimes? - if it was kdm's option to disable root logins, kdm woud clearly say so. "login failed" might indicate that pam blocks root logins, though. please examine the authpriv.* syslog facility. How can I check my system's kdmrc ? It is located at /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDM#Configuration KDM is unmaintained and not used in KDE Plasma 5. SDDM is the login manager used in KDE Plasma 5.
