Description Grósz Dániel 2008-07-16 02:29:24 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.83)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

I would like to see Firefox 3's location bar features in Konqueror - most importantly the search inside the addresses and the titles, but also easy editing of the bookmarks.

I think it could be combined with Dolphin's navigation bar so that this Firefox 3-like popup menu is used when it is in location editing mode, and this navigation bar could be used in Konqueror as well (with location editing mode being the default in Konqueror and breadcrumb bode in Dolphin and Gwenview). This would make sense if local places were also recorded in the history, not only remote documents. That would also be useful, I sometimes want to open a directory or file in Konqueror that I used recently just to find out that only the web pages I visited appear in the history.

Assuming you refer to the so-called awesome bar, _please_ make this optional and default to off. I and pretty much everybody I know turned it off within minutes.

By the way, you can press F9, go to history and search there, if you want to.

Yes, this should definitely be implemented. Let's face it: Firefox is the standard for browsing, and Konqueror needs to have Firefox's functionality, otherwise using Konqueror will seem like a downgrade, like using Epiphany or Lynx.

Yes, oldskool snobs will sneer at anything new, but they don't have to use it. KDE is about cutting-edge stuff. Advanced search functionality in the address bar ought to be provided.
Comment 3 Richard Hartmann 2008-10-16 02:25:22 UTC
Not sure where the snob is coming from. the classic bar is predictable, while the awesome bar is not (both within limits, of course).

Also, I would argue that KDE is about adapting it to the user's needs and to be the best tool it can be. Cutting edge plays a role, but it's not the main focus.
Comment 4 Grósz Dániel 2008-10-16 20:22:15 UTC
Of course this should be optional. What I would especially see an improvement is that the text I type in the address bar is searched not only in the beginning of the addresses in the history but also inside the addresses and the titles of the pages.
Comment 5 Richard Hartmann 2008-10-16 21:31:19 UTC
Which reminds me of something. If the user types 'foo', 'foobar.com' should be shown above 'quuxfoo.com', etc. Similar to what krunner does.

Note that a part of this (searching inside the address) has already been reported in bug 148962.

Now in Safari 4.

I bet Konqueror will soon become the only browser not to support this feature ;)
Comment 10 AleX 2009-02-25 17:04:18 UTC
This and zoom remembering are the only reasons I still use Firefox despite its poor integration with KDE.

I wish I could throw firefox to the rubish and use konqueror instead some day.

Regardless of what the awesomebar does right or wrong, the abilty to search part of a URL, a domain name, a title are essential to finding the page I'm looking for from the location bar in Firefox, and it searches browser history as well as bookmarks.

A Google Summer of Code student is working on it, see
