Version:           2.9.999 (using 4.00.00 (KDE 4.0.0) "release 2.2", compiled sources)
Compiler:          gcc
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.6.22.13-0.3-default

when i try to open a .rar file, ark launches but only shows a message: No archive loaded

What version of rar are you using? The free or non-free one?
On what distribution did you have this problem?

rar works ok with ark from kde3,
this is in kde4, opensuse 10.3

Ark in KDE 4.0 does not support RAR files. The support will (hopefully) come back in 4.1.
