In KDE v3 it was possible to have previews in the file select/save dialog as icons. This is/was extremely convenient, especially for things such as images.

I believe this is still possible, but there is no GUI for it.

My suggestion is to have the previews-as-icons activated by default (they are more useful than the preview pane -- which is nice but does not give an overview of folder content).
