As there's already a feature for setting the album cover, I'd like that to be implemented for artists too. It would be amazing to use a "artist-flow" browser to select the artist and then the album, or simply just to view singer face in the collection sidebar.

While I think this is definatly a cool idea, I'm not really sure how feasible it would be to implement.  There are no databases of artist pictures that I know of, so it would have to rely on the user searching for each and setting it manually.  I'm not sure how many users would want to spend the time doing that.

Well,
the artist tab is based on wikipedia, isn't it? There's almost always a picture of the artist there... it may be a little hackish, but the automagic menu entry "fetch from wikipedia.org" should fetch the first picture of that page and propose that. Or use a window with the preview of a google images query.

Maybe www.last.fm is a better place for pictures, but I haven't checked if it is allowed to use them. But last.fm contains many many pictures of artists and albums.

Grabbing those pictures from last.fm sounds like a nice idea, it is already done in the Similar Artists Applet

Actually I think this is a great idea and straight forward to implement.

Could be a student job maybe.

Would this make a good GSOC project, or is it too simple?  If they added the capability and made a GUI similar to the album art one to control it, would that be sufficient for a GSOC project?

No, definitely not three months, more like three days. 
A lot of places to change but you just have to do it like the album.

Removing junior-job keyword. It would be 3 days for Ralf (*very* experienced Amarok dev), but could turn into a nightmare for an Amarok newcomer.
