The "Select only new" choice is no longer working (but I surely remember it was ok somewhere around digikam 0.8.1).
Strange enough the thumbnails of new photos in the left pane miss the green sign, which I guess means digikam knows they are new.
Tried with canon a10 and a85

If I understand you correctly, this is a duplicate of #139024, which has been fixed meanwhile and will be released with 0.9.1.
