Description Tassilo Horn 2006-05-22 13:25:21 UTC
Version: 1.9.1 (using KDE KDE 3.5.2)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc-4.1.0
OS: Linux

I use kmail with emacs (or better, emacsclient) as external editor. This works ok for me, but I don't need the power of emacs' message-mode for all messages I write, only for about 20% of them.

So it would be great if kmail would allow to setup an external editor, which could then be opened on a per mail basis via an option in the composer menu or maybe a toolbar botton.

I think this would be a solution (or at least an approvement) to Bug #25755, too.

First, make it configureable, "Always use external editor" or "Use external editor only when told" or something like that

Secondly, make sure that there is a hot key or short-cut key for starting the external editor. (Make that configurable as well.) That way if someone is in "Only when told" mode and they are editing a message they thought would be quick, and later decide to use the external editor, they just hit a hot key and the editor starts up. (With the already edited message.) Don't force the use of a menu. (Although that should be there as well.)

That's my vote.

Instead of an extra configuration option this feature can be implemented by simply adding a keyboard shortcut for calling the external editor.

I agree with Björn. A keyboard shortcut plus a toolbar button I can add to the composer window would be most appropriate.

I wonder if this ever going to be confirmed...

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.

Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
