When changing the size of the KMail window vertical scrollbars appear in the Message View. It would be better to automatically adjust the size of the Subject Column, just like Akregator does, to avoid those scrollbars.

Do you mean "horizontal scrollbars appear in the Message List View" instead of "vertical scrollbars appear in the Message View"?
That would IMHO make more sense...
In that case, this bug report is a duplicate of bug #74619.
