Description Rudolf Kollien 2005-03-20 21:53:50 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.0)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

KDE 3.4.0
SuSE RPMs for 9.2

This bug isn't really an arts problem, but didn't found a item named "Knotify". So excuse me if this is the wrong topic.

Knotify doesn't play ogg files any more. Using artsplay on command line all plays ok. Using artsplay as the external player for knotify, all is ok. Setting to "use kde sound system" only wav files will be played. Using one of the many ogg files provided by KDE only digital silence appears.

This occured after updating from KDE 3.3.2 to 3.4.0. I reinstalled the previous artsd from 3.3.2 (where all sound worked) nothing changed. Compiled new arts (from 3.4.0) from the source rpms and installed them - nothing changed. So i think this is a knotify related problem. Artsplay does the job, noatun, amarok and so on all can play ogg files via artsd.

BTW: till today i don't understand why i have to use "OSS" in the sound system configuration when i'm using alsa. Changing to "ALSA" no sound is heared anymore (neither wav nor ogg or mp3).

Same here on Gentoo. The problem is still there with KDE-3.4.1. The .ogg notifications only work if I do Control Centre -> Sound & Multimedia -> System Notifications -> Player Settings and set this to "Use an external player (/usr/kde/3.4/bin/artsplay)".
If I select "Use the KDE sound system", usr/kde/3.4/share/sounds/KDE_Beep_Car.ogg doesn't play.

Can confirm. As far as i could investigate it could(!!!) be associated with the sound chip. But when, why does artsplay as an external player plays ogg files?

BTW: 3.4.1 still has the problem on SuSE 9.2.

Hmmm, (thanks to Benno Schulenberg <benno@nietvergeten.nl> for the info), it seems that the .ogg notifications _will_ play with KDE sound system only if the Volume in Control Centre -> Sound & Multimedia -> System Notifications -> Player Settings is at 100%. The problem has been solved in CVS: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61438

Setting the volume to max works for me. Now ogg's get played. Many thanks.
