Description Dan Langille 2005-02-17 20:56:15 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.2)
Installed from: FreeBSD Ports
Compiler: gcc (GCC) 3.4.2 [FreeBSD] 20040728
OS: FreeBSD

It would be nice to be able to not unhide the panel when moving the mouse to an area where the panel would normally appear. For example, when holding down the shift key, the panel would not appear when the mouse goes to top of the screen. Perhaps the user is trying to get to a border to resize a window. Playing hide and seek with the panel when you don't get the mouse placement just right can be annoying.

Another thing would be to have a modifier key so a click on the panel can send it back again. On small screens, every bit of space matters indeed, and I dislike hiding panels by sliding them off screen (if I *do* want the panel, i want it right away, and where I left it, not sliding out and possibly rearranging my windows on the way)

I found Remote Desktop on my XP workstation has a nice feature. Their 'taskbar' doesn't appear immediately. There is a slight pause, of about 0.5s before it appears.

A possible solution for this a user-configurable 'delay before showing' parameter. Defaulting this value to zero would retain existing behaviour but allow users to specify their dealy in milliseconds.

i'd be fine with adding this as a "hidden" feature (e.g. not exposed in the GUI) with a sensible default. perhaps Shift key? i don't think i'd get bug reports if that was the default, either, since who holds the shift key down while unhiding a panel?

care to try your hand at a patch? =)

hrm. this is what 'autohide' is for isn't it? or "allow windows to hide panel"?

@Dan

that would drive me crazy =P

> user-configurable 'delay before showing'

the taskbar is rapidly gaining configuration options. i'm actually trying to keep this in check. difficult line to toe.

The Shift key would be fine by me. I can get used to that.

I'd also like the taskbar not appearing immediately option. That'd
be great.

Sorry, I cannot help with a patch, but I can help with testing. My
time on the computer is severely limited due to forces I cannot
control. :)

Kicker is currently unmaintained, you can look to your distribution for help, however.
