well that exactly, i'm not any experienced Linux user and i've been looking at the posts and i'd like some help. I start Kopete and it asks me for my hotmail account password...then it connects briefly(for a couple of seconds) and then it disconnects, and stays that way.
this seems to happen with all the messengers kopete is suppoused to work.yahoo,ICQ...etc

You really should upgrade your Kopete and your KDE.

The problem with propriatary protocol is that there is no protocol specifications of the protocols. which means that when their upgrade their server, Kopete may not work anymore.
To fix that problem, you should upgrade your client.

If you want to be able old to use old client, You should switch to Jabber.
