Description Michael W. Holdeman 2005-01-24 17:32:44 UTC
Version: 3.4.0_beta1 (using KDE KDE 3.3.91)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc-3.4.3
OS: Linux

kmilo in teh 3.4.0_beta1 Gentoo ebuild. All kde built fine.
kmilo when active always keeps volume pop-up in center of screen and shows volume level 0. When volume is increased sound will work but it immediately returns to 0. Kmix can increase volume, and again it immediately returns to 0. Mute and unmute works. Hardware checks out fine.
Kmilo on kde 3.3.2 works as expected.
This is on Dell 8600 laptop.

Compiling info.

I can confirm this. I also use the 3.4_beta1 Gentoo ebuild, on a Dell Inspiron 5100.

Cheers, Wouter

Comment 2 Willi Richert 2005-01-28 09:37:25 UTC
The problem is that I have no time at the moment to fix it, and I have another laptop now without special multimedia keys so I cannot debug it right now. Any one how might fix this instead of me?
Comment 3 Alex Young 2005-03-02 00:30:53 UTC
I can confirm that this bug is still present in the 3.4.0rc packages from kde-redhat.sf.net. I am also using a dell 8600c.
I have tried removing that mapping to XF86AudioLowerVolume from my .xmodmap file but this had no effect. I have checked using xev that there are unexpected key events.
There was no problem with this in kde 3.3.x. I could not get this in 3.4b2 as kmilo didn't run at all.
Comment 4 Michael W. Holdeman 2005-03-02 00:36:32 UTC
I can confirm as well. rc1 now kmilo runs again, but still has this bug.
Comment 5 M-A Loyer 2005-03-02 14:29:36 UTC
I confirm this bug on a Dell 8600 with 3.4rc1 on Gentoo.
Comment 6 Andrew Hartford 2005-03-18 21:02:08 UTC
This is a problem for me as well. I'm using a dell latitude D600 laptop.
Comment 7 Andrew Hartford 2005-03-18 21:08:45 UTC
Sorry, I should have mentioned that I'm running KDE 3.4 final. I also tried running xev on the window with 'Volume' in a large blue font. I see that its getting constant events like this:

PropertyNotify event, serial 10, synthetic NO, window 0x600008,
    atom 0x28 (WM_NORMAL_HINTS), time 17317128, state PropertyNewValue

If there are other tests I could run, let me know.

I've just upgraded to KDE 3.4 as well and face the same problem. Laptop is also a Dell Inspiron 8600 running fc3.
Comment 9 Wouter Deconinck 2005-04-24 20:55:03 UTC
This doesn't seem to be a problem with kmilo, but rather with the kernel module i8k. Try the command

    i8kbuttons -u "# up" -d "# down" -m "# mute" -r 100 -v

and you'll see a list of "down" events scrolling by (it doesn't react on other events). Probably the best solution is not to use the i8k module and define the shortcuts yourself (with "showkeys" you can figure out if the volume keys are recognized without the module).
Comment 10 Norm Fasey 2006-01-26 17:23:41 UTC
I can confirm that this is still a bug on Kubuntu using KDE 3.5 on my Dell Inspiron 8500. i8k is loaded as I need to control my fans to keep my laptop cool. Otherwise it tends to shut down when it overheats!

KMilo is no longer maintained, marking all bugs accordingly.
