Description Tom Malfrere 2005-01-16 15:47:41 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.2)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

I'm running SuSE 9.1 and updated KDE to 3.3.2 with package from the supplementary folder on ftp.suse.com

when I check "Show icons on desktop" in KDE control center->Desktop->behaviour, I get an error at startup telling me "the process for the file protocol has died unexpectedly".
No icons are displayed on my desktop then.

resizing the screen gives me m icons back...
Comment 1 Tom Malfrere 2005-01-22 18:42:35 UTC
I have done some further testing...
it's seems to be a conflict with gkrellm somewhere.
gkrellm doesn't always gives problems... only when it displays the traffic of my wlan0 interface. When displaying my eth0 interface there's no problem...
Comment 2 Martin Koller 2005-02-06 20:07:50 UTC
Can you explain in more detail what gkrellm is and what is it's relation to the mentioned problem, please.
In addition, is there any useful output in your ~/.xsession-errors file ?
Comment 3 Tom Malfrere 2005-02-09 19:54:04 UTC
I've done further tests and I even have the problem without gkrellm (this is a system monitor)
lot's of errors in ~/.xsession-errors but none that I can directly link to it. Do you want it anyway?
Comment 4 Martin Koller 2005-02-15 22:29:04 UTC
Can you try to further track down the problem by (re)moving step by step files from your ~/Desktop until you know which of these files is making the problem?

Probably it also has something to do with file previews (just guessing). Do you have previews activated ? If so, try to disable it.
Comment 5 Tom Malfrere 2005-02-15 23:06:37 UTC
I've got the impression that it is more frequent when I'm working on a wireless LAN. I'm now on a fixed network and I'm not getting the error... so removing icons won't help for now...
Tomorrow I'll be on a wifi network, I'll test it then...
Comment 6 Tom Malfrere 2005-02-17 00:57:12 UTC
I removed all files from my ~/Desktop.
The ".directory" file and the "Trash" folder are regenerated automatically.
I'm still getting the same error 2x "the process for the file protocol died unexpectedly" and the trashcan icon isn't displayed until I resize my desktop.
Comment 7 steve k 2005-03-27 07:18:35 UTC
hi,
i am recieving the same error. On my computer it only occurred when i fixed my sound system. I'm running Debian on a TP770 laptop. I also have no icons on the desktop except for those that kde put there by default.
when i restart the session it regenerates the icons. I always use the computer in the same conditions (wired network and what have you) so i can pretty much say that it happens erratically and independent of how my network is working.
Comment 8 Tom Malfrere 2005-03-27 17:28:55 UTC
what do you mean with "fixed my sound system" ? Do you mean the sound notifications that you couldn't hear? I fixed this also, but only by donwloading the SuSE source rpm and compiling that rpm myself... Can't say if I had before the sound noitication fix or not...
Comment 9 Tom Malfrere 2005-05-01 14:58:29 UTC
I upgraded to KDE 3.4... no problems anymore
Comment 10 Peter Sletten 2005-11-09 18:44:57 UTC
hi,
I am getting the same error on my newly installed suse 9.3 with kde 3.4. I did not get this error on my old suse 9.0 (with their default kde installation). And I do not have any gkrell* on my machine. Furthermore I have experienced the problem both before and after I made changes to the "Show icons on desktop" (in KDE control center->Desktop->behaviour).

I can see the status of this bug is "resolved" but I fail to find any solutions. Are there any solutions available?
Comment 11 Peter Sletten 2005-11-09 23:14:44 UTC
hi again,
I'm beginning to doubt if I experienced the bug before checking the "Show icons ...", so I'll uncheck it again, and wait for the error to occur. Then I'll report back in. As the error is some what erratic it can take a while for me to get back, so don't hold your breath on this one.
Comment 12 abrahams 2005-12-13 01:06:52 UTC
I've also gotten the same error message under KDE 3.4.2 and SuSE 10.0. A post I found via Google suggested that it might only occur on the first session, and logging out and logging back in again will avoid it. That seems to be the case for me. The message box indicates that Kdesktop is producing the message.

Why is this bug listed as "Resolved" if people are still experiencing it? Has it been diagnosed?
Comment 13 abrahams 2006-03-21 01:54:10 UTC
Please reopen this bug. I still encounter the problem under KDE 3.5.0, level "a". Peter Sletten (comment #10) also encountered it. Because it occurs unpredictably, Tom Malfrere's report that he hasn't encountered it again does not mean that it has been fixed.
Comment 14 David Faure 2006-03-21 18:57:17 UTC
OK, reopening, but as long as I don't see a relevant .xsession-errors error message or a kio_file backtrace, I can't even guess where this problem might come from.

Fair enough. The next time I see this happen (it's unpredictable) I'll
collect .xsession-errors (and post it) instead of just logging out.

Comment 16 Steve Lucas 2006-04-01 21:10:51 UTC
Happens on almost every boot on my laptop with Mandriva 2006. The logout/log back in fix sometimes fixes the problem and allows the icons to be displayed but not always. I also feel the problem is wireless related because it started occurring on the next boot after I created the second and third wireless "profiles" (using
/usr/bin/perl /usr/sbin/drakroam). Not everyone is using Mandriva or this program, of course, so it can't be the whole explanation. The wireless functionality itself works fine but no desktop icons are displayed. I'll get an xsession errors log to post.
Comment 17 abrahams 2006-04-01 22:38:57 UTC
In my case it's not wireless-related because I don't have wireless activated on the computer where I see it.

I hope that the next person who encounters this (I see it only sporadically) will post the .xsession-errors file after seeing it. Hint: logging out probably kills that file, so open a command window (you can still do that) and copy .xsession-errors to a temp file that you can then post when you have your system back.
Comment 18 Steve Lucas 2006-04-02 01:01:01 UTC
Here is my .xsession-errors.log. It is not too long; notice the BadWindows messages at the end.

I am not certain that the BadWindows messages are there every time this happens, but will continue monitoring.

Note: this was a fresh install of mdk2006 on the laptop, not an upgrade, and all updates through last night have been applied.

Not sure what header is involved in the header read problem; is this referring to a disk I/O error or a zero-length file??

.xsession-errors from an unsuccessful start and also from a successful start

By comparing the results of a successful start and an unsuccessful start, it
might be possible to see what's causing the problem.
Comment 21 Anders Lund 2006-11-20 15:54:13 UTC
I got this issue just recently, after upgrading kubuntu (dapper -> edgy). I have never encountered it before.
Comment 22 dave collier 2007-01-09 01:07:07 UTC
I have a fresh kubuntu (edgy) install and see this problem on 90% of logins. After this I usually need to mount my USB HDD. When I don't get the message the drive is auto mounted. The problem seemed to start (although it shows erratically so no guarantees) after I tried using a couple of other USB devices (camera and memory card reader).

Comment 24 Antti Mäkelä 2007-09-03 15:01:30 UTC
I can confirm this happening with 3.5.7 as well.

Problem: When built with debug symbols and having kdebugdialog active, the problem never happens. Only when debugging is OFF this happens. So bit hard to get traces.

Platform is Gentoo in this case.
Comment 25 Al Appel 2007-10-09 00:16:27 UTC
I started having this problem after a Linux download. This happened every time I rebooted so I started removing applications in the reverse order of their installation until I got a normal boot. The last application I removed was The Clam Anti-Virus and its supporting programs. I then reinstalled Clam and the problem reappeared. Upon removing Clam again, I got a normal boot. Somebody might want to check this out.
I am running PCLinuxOS 2007 with KDE 3.5.7-10.
Comment 26 Travis Evans 2007-10-10 01:44:50 UTC
Once when I had this problem (on some other system which I don't remember), I didn't have any anti-virus program installed. The .xsession-errors was similar to the one in Comment #18.

As someone in some similar bug pointed out, it seems like this might be some sort of race condition, as if something in KDE in certain cases (or on certain systems or with certain configurations) is trying to start up or initialize too soon.
Comment 27 Edward Piecewicz 2007-11-28 22:27:54 UTC
I have openSUSE running on two desktop systems, once is rather old (ten years) and another more recent. This problem only came up once on the more recent system.

The older of the two has a 166 MHz Pentium/MMX CPU and at -every- login, I also saw the Kdesktop error that the protocol for the process died, until I turned off the background.

When I turned off the background image, Kdesktop loads in fine and the desktop icons appear as expected, but when it the background is turned back on, at the next login, the error returns. It does not matter what background is being used, or the size of the jpg/png/whatever.
Comment 28 Silvan Calarco 2008-03-08 20:09:43 UTC
I can confirm the problem with KDE 3.5.8. The kdesktop error is accompained by the following messages in .xsession-errors:

kbuildsycoca running...
DCOP Cleaning up dead connections.
kio (KIOConnection): ERROR: Header read failed, errno=104
kio (KIOConnection): ERROR: Header has invalid size (-1)

and only happens the first time the computer boots. It does not happen always but I might say 90% of the time.

Disabling the background image the problem disappears. I use compiz and disabling it too fixes the problem.
Another effect is that ksplash progess stops to the "loading windows manager" icon, this doesn't happen too when background image is disabled.
The problem does not seem to be related to computer speed, I currently have the problem on a 2,2 GHz dual core notebook.
Comment 29 FiNeX 2008-12-10 02:06:57 UTC
Kdesktop is no more mantained. Fortunatly this bug seems not to be valid for KDE 4. Please reopen if this bug is not a kdesktop one (and it is not solved) or it can be reproduced on KDE 4.
Comment 30 FiNeX 2009-01-02 20:29:51 UTC
Bug closed. Kdesktop is no more mantained.
