Description Thomas Zander 2005-01-12 21:34:06 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)

The activation gestures for sticky and slow keys are pretty complicated to avoid conflicting with normal usage. Unfortunately I hit them quite often and the slow keys being enabled makes normal usage quite impossible.

I feel that it should be much easier to get back to stop using slow keys when the user accidently holds the shift for 8 seconds (it happens to me often enough!).
Please alter the informing dialog which comes when the slow/sticky keys features are enabled to also have a cancel button to immediately disable the feature again.

I agree with this. It would also be much better if these gestures were turned OFF in the first place. I recently had 10 minutes of panic when I thought my keyboard was broken because I'd somehow activated the feature, wasn't _informed_ that I'd activated the feature, and my keys were working really slowly.

This was made worse by it being much harder to find the keyboard settings than it should be (keyboard is a peripheral, yet it's under Regional & Accessibility instead of Peripherals. Go figure.)

the feature is no longer default and people that turn them on are expecting it to work. So a special cancel button is not worth it
Comment 3 Thomas Zander 2005-01-24 15:34:39 UTC
From a usability point-of-view the fact that the keyboard-shortcuts are not enabled by default don't make the wish to cancel enabling it on accidental activation any less.
Also people that need sticky keys will not be very happy when slow-keys is enabled accidentally.

I still would like this to stay a wishlist item.

Please reopen.

The feature is on by default in the 3.4 beta. I presume that you mean this has been fixed since.

This feature is also still on in KDE 3.4.1... I just got an emergency call from someone who accidentally enabled the slow keys. The user had NO idea how to deactivate them again, his desktop was virtually unusable.

What KDE version has the fix included?

I do not know what the person called "someone" did in order to activate slow keys without knowing it.

Concerning the original bug report I have to say that the requested feature was indeed missing in the original version of the dialog. However, I had improved the dialog before KDE 3.4 was released. The dialog shown in all 3.4.x releases does offer a cancel opportunity, so I will close the bug now.

When keeping persons who need slow keys or sticky keys in mind turning off the gestures by default is no option. That is why we once again changed the default setting. Currently the gestures are enabled by default unless you use KPersonalizer. KPersonalizer asks whether you want to use the gestures, but defaults to turn them off.

If you feel that with current versions of KDE somehow it is too easy to accidently turn on slow keys, then please open a new bug report and tell me both why you feel so and your suggestion how to improve the situation.
