Description Gilles Schintgen 2004-12-24 16:32:37 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.2)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages

Hi,

I know that there are quite few fixed width related bugs in bugzilla, yet this doesn't correspond to any of them, at least to my knowledge.

How about changing the _default_ font (both for viewing and for composing) to fixed width? The reason is of course the possibility of ASCII tables, short program listings or ASCII .sigs in e-mails. IMHO in a plain text environment like e-mail (HTML is a different matter) a fixed font has only advantages when compared to a variable width font. Since the defaults are supposed to reflect the best choice for the majority of users, I'd say it would be best to activate the "Use Fixed Font" Option both for viewing and for composing messages.
Of course, I don't want anyone to be forced to use fixed width fonts, it's just about a reasonable (at least in my opinion) default choice.

Happy Holidays!

Old wish, indeed. Maybe someone should either deny or act on it. This comment and thus mail might help in that regard. :)

As to defaulting to fixed width for all: Strong oppose!

I use Pine alongside with KMail & have Terminus installed on all my systems with a tty/X server, so I _am_ a huge fan of fixed fonts. That being said, as OP points out, KMail should cater to the masses.
My mom will definitely complain if her email is not pretty any more. She even me colored text, even though I told her I don't even read the HTML part, only the plain-text one.
And that is the type of person who KDE needs to cater to. The power users can simply switch over to fixed width if they want to. Normal users can't do the reverse (or won't even bother to try as the application looks weird).

I strongly oppose too!

Can any of the devs chip in on this? I am leaning towards closing this WONTFIX, but I am biased (and not a dev).

Don't seem to be very popular.
