Description stefan.asserhall 2004-12-22 18:46:08 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: gcc (GCC) 3.3.3
OS: Linux

No translation is available for Multisynk (and the
rest of Kitchensync), since all Makefile.am in
kdepim/kitchensync lack message targets to enable
extraction of .pot files for translation.
Comment 1 Holger Freyther 2004-12-31 19:17:09 UTC
I've at least added the message target to Makefile.am for multisynk.
Missings are targets for libksync and libkonnector2 are missing and both GUIs should
probably add the catalogues.
Remaining issue is who will install the Catalogue for the Parts (KGenericFactory) and for
the resources.
Comment 2 Holger Freyther 2005-01-09 14:15:23 UTC
Translations targets have been created and translations will be inserted to the Catalogue of the Application.
Comment 3 Burkhard Lück 2006-12-19 17:38:58 UTC
my system: recent stable compiled from sources

1. some dialogs in multisynk are untranslated, these strings come from kitchensync/libkonnector2/filters/calendarfilter.cpp
This error is caused by:
KGlobal::locale()->insertCatalogue( "libkitchensync" ); in main.cpp

But there is no message catalogue called libkitchensync.pot in l10n/templates

2. kitchensync is still completely untranslated (no messages target in Makefile.am, tries to insert the same nonexistent message catalogue libkitchensync.pot as multisynk)

3. no messages target in libksync, the existing message catalogue libksync.pot in l10n/templates is totally outdated

4. no messages target for libkonnector2, I suppose this should be extracted to the missing catalogue libkitchensync.pot

patch for all missing messages targets in Makefile.am's

with this patch all missing/outdated message catalogs are extracted/updated and
the applications are translatable (tested with recent 3.5 stable).
Please give the translators (kde-i18n-doc@kde.org) a warning with the commit,
as it leads to ~130 untranslated or fuzzy messages.
Comment 5 Burkhard Lück 2006-12-22 22:01:13 UTC
SVN commit 615817 by lueck:

added missing messages targets to make kitchensync fully translatable
scripty will generate 120 new untranslated + 12 fuzzy messages tonight

Comment 6 Holger Freyther 2006-12-22 22:27:26 UTC
This code is dead and superseeded by the implementation using OpenSync. I would not like to commit this as this puts unneeded preassure on our beloved translators.
Comment 7 Thomas Reitelbach 2006-12-26 16:31:03 UTC
KDE 3.5 will have a long lifetime in-the-wild until KDE 4 is ready.

I believe we should not bother normal users with a untranslated GUI for such a long period, even if the code is considered dead. The situation would be quite different if OpenSync were implemented with KDE 3.5.6 already, but i'm not sure if that is possible or is it already done?
Comment 8 Holger Freyther 2006-12-26 17:05:55 UTC
IMHO the KitchenSync code should be removed from KDE3.5 as it is completely dead. It is the step child of kdepim. Whenever semantic is changed in a KDEPIM library KitchenSync was and will not be updated which lead to more breakage....
I will ask Allen Winter to remove KitchenSync.
Comment 9 Stefan Winter 2007-01-03 21:01:01 UTC
Holger,
any update on the state of kitchensync? It's still in the 3.5 branch, and scripty picks it up for translations.
I wonder if it makes sense to actually put any effort into translating this (I'm the "de" translator of kdepim).
Reopened, because I'd like some clarity :-)

No, please don't revert the patch. Without the correct Makefile.am target
nobody can translate those strings, but with the patch it is possible. And
those teams that are not able to translate the strings don't loose anything
because the strings were untranslated before anyway.

Cheers,
Thomas

Kitchensync has been removed from kdepim. Please refer to
http://lists.kde.org/?t=116811174300002&r=1&w=2 for the discussion regarding
this decision.
