when in a two-user chat in Jabber: neither the "encrypt messages" function nor the "translate" function affect the message sent to the other user, whether used together or separately.
(yes, I am aware of the inherent insecurity of sending a message plaintext to babelfish and then encrypting it)

- - in the chat window, the message I type is put in a different colour and prefixed with :
     Outgoing Encrypted Message:

- - If I look up the chat history, the message is encrypted in the history

- - the above two effects occur whether or not translation is enabled

- - translation has no effect whatsoever on either the message window or the history

- - just to check that the client at the other end was not automatically decrypting, I changed the key used for encryption to one of which neither of us had the private key ( I did not check if this occurred with translation)

so you're saying that if you do translation, no encryption gets done?
Comment 2 Chris Kerr 2005-01-19 19:39:27 UTC
no encryption is done whether or not translation is
enabled
(or rather, encryption is done, but the message is
sent as plaintext - the message is only encrypted
before being stored in the history)
