Description Philippe Rigault 2004-12-16 21:52:57 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.2)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
Compiler: GCC-3.4.2 KDE built using konstruct on Fedora Core 3 x86_84
OS: Linux

How to reproduce:

1. Start Kontact

2. Make sure system tray icon is enabled in
Configure Kontact -> Appearance -> System Tray

   x Enable system tray icon
   System Tray Mode:
x Always show Kmail in system tray
o Only show Kmail in system tray if there are unread messages

(The bug happens in both System Tray Modes, but it does not need a new mail to demonstrate with this setting)

3. Click on the system tray kmail icon:
  a) Kontact disappears from the taskbar
  b) if Kontact was on the screen, it disappears too

4. Click again on the system tray kmail icon:
  a) Kontact reappears on the taskbar
  b) Kontact appears on the screen

5. Same as 3), and so on.

The correct behaviour IMHO is that the system tray kmail icon toggles Minimize on/off, i.e has the same behaviour as clicking on the taskbar kmail item.

Cheers,

Philippe

Hi,

according to the KDE styleguide the behaviour is absolute correctly, no bug so far.

Ciao,
Tobias

>according to the KDE styleguide
Since there is no mention of the _taskbar_ behaviour (only the systray) in the KDE styleguide, I can't say you are wrong ;-).

>WONTFIX
It seems that the behaviour described above has been fixed in KDE-3.4.1.
Kontact no longer disappears from the taskbar when activated/desactivated from the systray.

RESOLVED FIXED

Oops, spoke too fast. It is not fixed.

Maybe I did not describe it well. Another way to characterize the bug is:

1. Open Kontact, which shows up on the taskbar and the systray. (Normal)

2. On the taskbar, click repeatidely on the Kontact entry. This toggles minimize/restore each time, and the Kontact taskbar entry is always present. (Normal)

3. On the systray, click repeatidely on the Kontact entry. This toggles minimize/restore each time, BUT the Kontact taskbar entry disappears at each minimize and reappears at each restore. (BUG)

I'm afraid I see this "bug" in a completely different light.

First, "kontact" does not show up in the system tray - KMail and/or akregator put icons there.

I don't care whether kontact disappears from the task bar, but I don't believe clicking on one of the system tray icons should always minimize/restore _kontact_.

Clicking on the KMail icon should only minimize contact if KMail is the current kontact component being displayed. Otherwise it should switch you to KMail. The same goes for akregator. It's annoying when reading news in KNode, to see the KMail icon showing new messages and click on it, only to have it minimize kontact. Then you have to click on the KMail icon again to see mail. Then click on the akregator icon twice to see your RSS feeds.

Derek, don't be afraid, you bring up a very good point :-)

I agree completely, this would be an enhancement.

but the taskbar thing is different, and still a bug IMO.

>I don't care whether kontact disappears from the task bar

You should. The taskbar is there to show you _all_ desktop applications that are currently running. It is like a visual 'ps' command. You wouldn't want something to hide to you some processes when you type 'ps', and the same goes for the taskbar. The only acceptable reason for an application to disappear for the taskbar is that the application has exited. That is what users expect from the taskbar.

Bug still there in KDE-3.5

If all systray issues are solved in KDE4 and marked as duplicate of that bug, this is another one.

Dupe it is then

*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 99827 ***
Comment 9 Philippe Rigault 2006-10-28 23:56:30 UTC
I am curious as to how one can claim that "all systray issues are solved in KDE4", and even more curious as to whether someone has actually checked KDE4 behaviour with regard to this bug, which involves the taskbar as well.

Has this specific bug been _demonstrated_ to be fixed in a working _implementation_ of KDE4? If yes, then close it.
If not, it should _not_ be closed, irrespective of when or in which version people _think_ it will disappear.

The very purpose of bugzilla is to track bugs in their real state, not to do any wishful thinking. Otherwise, one might as well claim that all konqueror bugs will be fixed in KDE5 and close all of them right now.
Comment 10 S. Burmeister 2006-10-29 09:44:41 UTC
If there is going to be a new implementation of systray-behaviour, then it does not make sense to fix them in 3.5.5, if this is even considered a fix. Given the time (2 years) this is a defacto wontfix, sadly.

So even if this would not have been marked as a dup it would not change anything. Yet, for the dev the bug with all the dups in it is an easy way to go through all the systray issues and test the new implementation.

In case this bug-report is still valid for KDE4, just re-open.

I'm using KDE 3.5.5. Same bug... But it's crashing not only disappering...

But it's only a fresh start of PC... After first crash, it does not happen again, until reboot...

Some time I loose Mail Meta Data... Perhaps Mails, too? I don't know...
