Description K. Schiffner 2004-11-04 23:53:56 UTC
Version: 1.4.1 (using KDE KDE 3.2.3)
Installed from:    Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS:                Linux

When kscd is active (in the system tray) and a DVD is inserted in the DVD/CD-ROM drive to install software, the kernel reports every second the following error messages:

kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x54
kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x54
kernel: ATAPI device hdc:
kernel: Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05)
kernel: Cannot read medium - incompatible format -- (asc=0x30, ascq=0x02)
kernel: The failed "Read Subchannel" packet command was:
kernel:   "42 02 40 01 00 00 00 00 10 00 00 00 "

If the DVD is mounted succesfully, then the following message appears every 10 sec.

kernel: hdc: lost interrupt
kernel: hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x 3)

The software can't be installed due to the last error and the DVD can't be unmounted/ejected until rebooting.

Kernel: 2.4.24
DVD/CD-ROM (hdc): SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616Q, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive

I confirm the packet command error messages (I haven't had the interrupt problem). My setup is SUSE 9.3 with kernel 2.6.11.4-21.7-default, DVD drive is LITE-ON SOHD-16P9S. I get the error messages (repeated every second) when any kind of DVD medium is inserted in the drive while kscd is running, or if kscd is started with a DVD in the drive. As soon as kscd quits, the error messages stop. With a CD in the drive there are no error messages. The errors do not prevent the DVD from being mounted (in SUSE 9.3 submounted) and I can read them and play videos from them. There is, however, one noteworthy problem: the SUSE installation DVD cannot be read by SUSE's administration program Yast, and as a result, I cannot install software from the DVD using Yast while kscd is running.

I'm seeing the same problem. Gentoo Linux myHost 2.6.11-gentoo-r11, amd64 with both a NEC 2500A and a NEC 3520 DVD/RW. This bug is actually pretty bad - it was very difficult to track down (since it only generates anonymous syslog messages) and it causes the drive to basically fail when reading or burning DVDs. (stuttering video, k3b crashes etc).

I've got a similar problem running Debian Testing, kernel 2.6.15-1-686. KsCD is version 1.6 using KDE 3.5.3. Drive is a Sony CRX320AE IDE CD-RW/DVD-ROM Drive. IDE Controller is Intel 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4. System is Dell OptiPlex GX1.

When KsCD is in the 'tray,' if I put in a DVD I get this log message every second:

kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x54 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05 }
kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown

Which is also printed to any open console. This fills up the logs and is annoying to the console user.

Otherwise, the DVD plays fine, can be mounted and unmounted normally. I don't have to reboot to get free of the issue. When KsCD is shut down (not in system tray nor running), the problem also clears up.
