Description Egmont Koblinger 2004-10-29 13:38:42 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.1)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
Compiler: gcc 3.3.4
OS: Linux

Fresh new user account, nothing put into the home (from skel), no global
konquerorrc file anywhere on the system.

Start konqueror, go to a java page -> java doesn't work.

Go to Konqueror Settings -> Java/JavaScript. Here I see that java is
enabled. The path field simply contains 'java' which should be ok since
my java (actually /usr/lib/java/jre/bin/java from java-1.5.0, but that
shouldn't matter) is in the PATH.

I do not change anything here, just press OK or Cancel (doesn't matter
which one). Restart konqueror. Java still does not work.
~/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc doesn't mention java at all.

Go back to this settings page. Change something on that page and then
revert that change. E.g. insert a space after the path ("java ") and then
immediately remove that space. Click on OK or Apply.

A completely new section called "[Java/JavaScript Settings]" appears in
~/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc. Java works from now on, I don't even
have to restart konqueror.

rm ~/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc and the story starts from the
beginning, so it's completely reproducible.

To summarize: in the lack of Java-specific options in the configuration
file, konqueror's actual behavior differs from the one shown in the
settings panel. This might mislead users and make them absolutely not
understand why java does not work and give them no clue how to enable it.

This bug stil exists, I just experienced it after udating to 3.4

KDE Version 3.4.0 (KDE 3.4.0, Gentoo)
Application Web Browser/File Manager
Operating System Linux (i686) release 2.6.11-rc2-mm1
Compiler gcc version 3.4.3-20050110 (Gentoo 3.4.3.20050110-r2, ssp-3.4.3.20050110-0, pie-8.7.7)
Comment 2 Anders Bergstr 2006-03-18 15:59:04 UTC
Got the exact same problem after I upgraded KDE to 3.5. It now works after I updated the settings and got a [Java/JavaScript Settings] section. Extremely annoying since you get fooled by the settings dialog.
Comment 3 Ben Adler 2006-08-30 22:58:13 UTC
I can reproduce this with konq/kde 3.5.2

It seems that the settings-dialog shows a default value when the rc-file doesn't contain the java-settings, but konqueror doesn't share that same default value?!
Comment 4 Roger Larsson 2006-08-30 23:15:43 UTC
+ unrelated to Tools->HTML Settings, tool disabled gives the same problem
(tested by benadler)
Comment 5 Michael Leupold 2009-04-19 13:53:58 UTC
I can still reproduce this problem on trunk r955492.
Comment 6 Philippe Cloutier 2009-11-04 19:24:46 UTC
I still experience this on KDE 4.3.2.
