Description Jens 2004-10-27 12:45:29 UTC
Version: 1.7.1 (using KDE 3.3.1, SuSE)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.3 (SuSE Linux)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.5-7.111-default

Hi,

I have a connection to a Cyrus IMAP server which I use with multiple folders. Since 3.2 KMail complains on startup about a file ".mailboxlist" that already exists. I basically ignored this warning and everything went fine.

However I updated to 3.3.1 yesterday and since then, one folder "archiv" contained ONLY one mail with subject "/HOMES/j/mylogin/.nsmail/.mailboxlist" and nothing else! Via webmail (Imp/Horde) I moved all mails from "archiv" into "INBOX-archiv" and deleted "archiv" and restarted KMail, hoping the error would go away.

It didn't. When I start KMail, it displays the INBOX fine. (see log_1 below) However as soon as I use the INBOX (click on a mail) it vanishes (see log_2) When I open a different folder and go back to INBOX, I only see the mail called "/HOMES/.../.mailboxlist".

What's going on here?

Strange - when I configure a folder prefix "INBOX" in the IMAP account settings, the INBOX (Posteingang) is shown correctly and everything works, but all the other folders are hidden. Without INBOX as a folder prefix, back to the above errors - and also, ".mailboxlist" shows up as a folder in the RMB "subscribe" menu which you get by right-clicking on the account in the left side mail folder structure.

Here is a log of Evolution-1.4.6 selecting the INBOX, for comparison:

Additional info:

Evolution displays the ".mailboxlist" file as a folder. When I delete it in Evolution (and thus, apparently, unsubscribe from all IMAP folders), KMail can again work as expected. (at least it displays my INBOX properly)

However, once I do this no other IMAP client can access any folders from my account.

Strange.

The log is pretty hard to read, please attach an ethereal log that shows the
startup of kmail with the expanded account and when you click on your inbox
("Posteingang"). This folder contains the message you're talking about,
right?

Hello,

I tried ethereal, but I could not find a way to record only Port 143. As
there is a LOT of network traffic here I don't want it to fully log
everything. Please tell me how to get ethereal to record only what I
need ;)

Thank you!

Comment 5 Carsten Burghardt 2004-10-28 15:15:58 UTC
AFAIK you can filter the ethereal log after it was created.

Comment 6 Jens 2004-10-28 17:42:45 UTC
Hi,

I have attached two conversation logs created with Ethereal, one with KMail
1.7.1 (showing the bug), one with Evolution 1.4.6 (not showing it). I
edited both files and search&replaced my login/password and the server
name to protect the innocent. :-)

By unsubscribing from all IMAP folders, and (from Evolution) deleting the
".mailboxlist" pseudo-folder, I am able to avoid the KMail bug, but as
soon as I resubscribe *any* folders it reappears. Now it's in the "archiv"
folder: KMail displays the "/HOMES/j/mylogin/.mailboxlist" message instead
of any content.

Evolution also displays ".mailboxlist" as a (non-subscribed" folder but
otherwise works fine.
Very strange.

Thank you for your help!

Your server installation seems pretty busted.
The .mailboxlist is indeed listed as a folder by the server so you have to
check with your server admin what's wrong with that.
This strange message is definitely in the folder so there is no kmail bug
either. The only bug in kmail is that it doesn't show the .mailboxlist
folder but I don't think thats important. Did you try to list only
subscribed folders (show only subscribed folders in the account config)?

Hello,

I did report to my local postmaster, will post replies here. Thanks!

But what I think *is* a bug is that it displays the ".mailboxlist" message
in an (seemingly) arbitrary *OTHER* folder, instead of all mails that are
*really* in that folder. Evolution doesn't do it, I installed it to check
for just that purpose! ;)

> Did you try to list only subscribed folders (show only subscribed
> folders in the account config)?

Yes, then I can't see any folders. Currently I must not be subscribed to
any, otherwise the .mailboxlist pseudo-message appears, and is displayed
in *one* of my folders, instead of its real content.

Comment 9 Carsten Burghardt 2004-10-29 14:47:33 UTC
According to your log the following happened:
- the account was checked for new mails
- a listing was started (the account is probably expanded) and one of the
folders is the ".mailboxlist"
- the folder INBOX was selected and a mail was displayed ("FEKO something")
- the folder ".mailboxlist" was selected which contains only one mail and
this was displayed

Isn't this the case? Perhaps some other folder has the imappath
".mailboxlist" and is named differently so please check your
~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc if any folder has this path.

That's strange, because I never clicked (and even saw) any folder called
".mailboxlist". I only saw the other folders.

Yes.

that cannot have happened. This folder never appeared in KMail's GUI.

Nope... but ".mailboxlist" has an _empty_ ImapPath:

I just tried to create such a folder on a cyrus server and kmail handles this
without a problem. Did you deactivate the "show hidden folders" checkbox in
the account settings?
Another detail on your server: it lists the INBOX folder without a delimiter
(* LIST (\NoInferiors) NIL INBOX) which violates the rfc 2060. Another
interesting detail is that this strange file/folder .mailboxlist is needed by
some clients (as you wrote). I won't be able to debug this further without a
test account and you should really think about switching to a better imap
server.

Yes. Tried both settings, actually.
I can work now and every folder displays normally, but everytime KMail
starts up it complains that the file .mailboxlist already exists.

"That's interesting. Veeeery interesting."

Which ones would you recommend? So far, I only know Cyrus and Courier, and
Courier apparently lacks certain features that are needed here.

Unfortunately, I don't control the mail server and when I bug them about
this again, the admins will probably switch to MS Exchange and force
everybody to use Outlook - just to annoy me. :-)

What did you change that fixed your problem with this ghost message?
I'll try to locate that message.

Definitely Cyrus as its fast and feature-complete.

I used Evolution to un-subscribe from every folder, and then deleted the
".mailboxlist" pseudo-folder.

I think that's what we are using right now. But I'm not really sure.

I don't think so or it's a rather old one. So...can we close this bug?

I don't know. It seems that if our IMAP server is buggy, KMail is the only
program that actually encounters these bugs. We have Horde/IMP as webmail,
many use Mozilla or Thunderbird, some use Evolution or Outlook, and none
of these mail programs have any problems. Only KMail.

OK, it seems to get problems with this special folder. Is there any chance
to get a test account to this server?

Hello,

unless you have special relations to the German Bundeswehr, I guess not.
=;) The mail server isn't reachable from outside anyway (only via SSH
tunnel).

I'll ask though.

Comment 19 Jens 2005-01-11 15:08:37 UTC
Hello,

getting an account on this IMAP server is not possible, but if you provide me with information on what to try (and how), and - if you need - a statically compiled KMail binary with debug information etc., I'll do my best to help weed this bug out.

Sorry this took so long! :)

I hope that somebody is still listening to this thread - otherwise I will reopen a new one.
I have the same problem with

kmail 1.8.3.
Debian Linux 2.6.14
kde 3.4.

Since two weeks I am no longer able to access my IMAP folders.
Unfortunately I am not able to tell you what was leading to this problem - maybe an upgrade of several kde components.

I am able to provide you with an IMAP server where you can try to analyse this.

please request imap server information from peter at p-simon.de

I think this should finally be closed. Unfortunately there wasn't much to do about it but there's also nothing the developers could do about this problem without the required access for debugging.
