Description Thomas 2004-10-15 06:20:46 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.3)
Installed from: Mandrake RPMs
OS: Linux

In Kmail in compose I would like to be able to insert a file into the message body in the same way as I can insert a file into a Knode article.
 in Knode Compose
  Click Attach
  Click Insert File
 in Kmail Compose
  Click Attach
Please create an option "Insert File"

It is possible to insert a file with <Alt>,'m','i'
which I do not see documented anywhere.
It is also possible to load the file into the clipboard
and dump the file into the Kmail Compose window.
It is apparently also possible to drag a file into The Kmail Compose window, but I have not yet discovered how to do it.
I would like to have the capability of inserting a file by clicking "Attach/Insert File".

It's under "Message" in the compose window. (Which is why <Alt>, m, i would work, as that's the shortcut for Message->Insert File).

I agree it would probably make more sense under the attach menu though (that's where I looked for it first).
Comment 2 Tom Albers 2004-10-17 18:33:08 UTC
It is in the attach menu now. So the new shortcut will be <alt>,a,a.
Just click on a file, hold your left mouse down and drag the file to the composer window, then release the mouse.
And the last question (from clipboard) is asked before, so I will merge this report with that one.

The new shortcut should be <Alt>, a, i.

An attachment is not the same as an insertion.
Has insertion been added to the Attach menu after Kde 3.2.3?
Comment 5 Tom Albers 2004-10-17 23:22:58 UTC
Attach file is located in the menu Attach and has the shortcut alt-a-a in the development version of kmail which leads to kde 3.4.

What I really wanted was:
in Kmail Compose
   Click Attach
   Click Insert File

Shortcut <Alt>,a,i

Please do not close as "Duplicate".
Please modify the program or close as "Wontfix".

What is "Click Attach" supposed to mean? Are you talking about a button in the toolbar? If yes, then please add this button yourself by configuring your toolbar (Settings->Configure Toolbars...). We won't add it to the toolbar because our usability guys would kill us if we added more buttons to the toolbar.

And what's wrong with Message->Insert File... with shortcut <Alt>,m,i anyway?
Comment 8 Thomas 2004-10-21 05:59:52 UTC
Attach->Insert File... with shortcut <Alt>,a,i
is the logical place for the capability right before "Attach Signature"

The "Insert File" capability is not related to anything else in "Message".

Attach means to attach something, i.e. to append it to the actual textual
message which you compose.
So Message | Insert File might not be optimal, but if we should move it at
all, then Attach is really the wrong place. We could talk about placing it
to Edit, for example.

BTW, the argument, that KNode has it below Attach is not really one.

What this report is really about and why it is open? The requested feature is there, works fine and the placement of the menu is correct.
