Description Timur 2004-09-27 11:25:58 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

It would be more beneficial to implement a closer integration between KAlarm and Kmail and Korganizer. I'm my mind the following are the mail requested features of such an integration:

- when scheduling a mail, it will be usefull to be able to select the sender id by chosing one of the personalities in kmail
- when scheduling a mail (or an event), it will be usefull to be able to chose if you want to find it also in Kmail (for example as sent item), or in korganizer (for example for a scheduled mail linked to a birthday)
- it will be usefull to schedule an e-mail from Kmail (which automatically invoke kalarm)
- it will be usefull to be able to select a draft message and schedule its possible delivery time

I don't see those features as technicall complex, but they will provide a better user experience.

regards,
Timur

1) I'll look into selecting a KMail personality.

2) I don't understand what you are asking for - please explain.

3, 4) Do you envisage using KMail to select and schedule these items? If so, you should raise these suggestions as wishlist items for KMail, not KAlarm. If not, how do you propose the user interface should operate?
Comment 2 Timur 2004-09-28 15:16:01 UTC
I'll try to clarify my second point by dividing it in two parts the one related to Kmail and the one to Kalendar:

When scheduling an mail from KAlarm, it will be usefull to have the possibility to select an option which - if chosen - will force the message (once sent) to be copied in Kmail sent folder (even if I chose to deliver it via sendmail: I know that I can select Kmail as delivery agent but to me is not really effective because it requires the me to press the send button in kmail to actually send the message).

When scheduling an event from KAlarm, it will be usefull to have the possibility to select an option which - if chosen - will force the event to be copied later on in the Kalendar (this way you will track of it in your calendar)

Regarding 3 and 4, you are right: my suggestion was to have the possibility to schedule the items from Kmail. I'll raise those points also for Kmail.

BTW, thank you for your prompt response and for the effort your are putting to give us a better PIM suite!

regards,
Timur

I have now implemented in CVS the options to:
1) Select a KMail personality as the sender of email alarms.
2) Have sent email alarms copied into KMail's sent folder if sendmail is used.

These features will be in the next release of kdepim, and in the forthcoming version 1.2.1 of the standalone KAlarm package.

I will think further about copying events into KOrganizer's calendar.

Thanks David for accepting my suggestions!

just a question: what are your concirns related to copying events in KOrganizer's calendar? Are there any issues from usability prospective that I didn't think at or is it maybe for technical reasons?

I'm not sure about copying events to KOrganizer's calendar for technical reasons - I'll have to look into whether and how this could be done.
Comment 6 David Jarvie 2004-12-09 18:46:01 UTC
When would you want an alarm to be copied into KOrganizer? Would a drag-and-drop mechanism be the best option?
Comment 7 Timur 2004-12-10 11:54:32 UTC
My idea was to have a checkbox in kalarm to select the alarm we want to keep track in KOrganizer. If it is technically too complex to be implemented immediately, drag and drop could be an interim solution, but from usability prospective the user has to perform an action twice instead of once so from my prospective it is not ideal.
In addition, a user might want to have all the item to be copied in KOrganizer automatically and therefore select a specific option in the KAlarm to have all the alarm copied in Korganizer.

What do you think about it?

I need to more clarification on what you are asking for.

Are you asking for an alarm to be held simultaneously in KAlarm and KOrganizer? If so, bear in mind that the two copies of the alarm will be completely independent of each other once it has been copied from KAlarm to KOrganizer.

Do you want to see the alarm simply show in KOrganizer's calendar, but not to act as an alarm there, so that only KAlarm displays notifications when it is due?
Comment 9 Timur 2004-12-10 14:35:26 UTC
David, I'm for the second option you are proposing, i.e. I want to see the alarm being shown in KOrganizer's calendar, but not to act as an alarm there, so that only KAlarm displays notifications when it is due.
My idea is that in this way I can keep track/have a look at scheduled events (past and future)

Phew!
I have now implemented showing KAlarm alarms in KOrganizer. There is a new checkbox in the Alarm Edit dialog to specify that alarms should be shown in KOrganizer, and there is also a Preferences dialog option to have it set as the default.

The new feature will be in KDE 3.5. Although the next standalone version of KAlarm will implement it, it also depends on changes to KOrganizer which will not appear until KDE 3.5.
