Description Dennis Robertson 2004-09-21 13:47:51 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc-3.4.1-r3
OS: Linux

artsd crashes every time on startup or when the sound system is enabled and stays crashed. I am not able to hear system notifications. Backtrace not possible as debugger gdb not found. I have emerged arts, kdelibs and kdebase with no effect.
Comment 1 Mick Pera 2004-10-09 20:29:17 UTC
I too am having the exact same problem at start up. I'm new to Linux but have mastered other OS. How do get rid of the problem....and what is SIGSEGV?
Comment 2 Justin Standard 2004-10-20 15:44:52 UTC
I have the same problem

This seems similar to bug # 83400, except all those people were using Mandrake Cooker, whearas we are using Gentoo...

For now, I will use Alsa directly for sound, or perhaps esd, but I like arts better because of it is highly integrated with kde programs. (And most others).

Here's the backtrace:

This looks like the same bug in this Gentoo Bug Report:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=67532

And it seems they have a solution.

Try re-emerging kde-multimedia... it seems that your arts and kde might have been compiled with different versions of gcc. I'm trying this now...

At first I'd this problem only when systemsounds in Ogg-Vorbis-Format should be played. Now, after I just changed those sounds in *.wav formated files it happens again. Dont know what I have to do about that. On Wave crashes I get this:

Comment 6 King Ho Cheung 2005-08-10 05:45:55 UTC
i hv exactly the same problem with my SLAX 5.0.6 (harddisk, a slackware based distro) after upgrading KDE from 3.4.1 to 3.4.2 (from artsd 1.4.1 to artsd 1.4.2). a screenshot is available here: http://r1cky.com/img/artsd.png
Comment 7 ptitoine 2005-08-11 21:04:10 UTC
i've downgrade to artsd 1.4.1 and the problem was solved, so only artsd 1.4.2 crash on my box
Comment 8 King Ho Cheung 2005-08-12 21:10:37 UTC
also, i need to downgrade *both* artsd (1.4.2 >> 1.4.1) & kdemultimedia (3.4.2 >> 3.4.1) to workaround.

oops, the above http://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=12340&action=view
was from Suse 9.3 with supplemental update to KDE 3.4.2
artsd 1.4.2, crash occurs when Amarok is left on pause for a while
Comment 11 Ian Hayhurst 2005-09-02 11:58:34 UTC
Downgraded to 1.4.0-10, and the problem is still there
Comment 12 gtapp 2005-12-27 22:53:31 UTC

Comment 13 Dan 2006-01-05 07:02:47 UTC
Finding same problem with fresh install of Slack 10.2 with artsd version 1.4.2 and with multiple users (root and other ~ one Google implied that config settings may be problem and that creating new user may relieve the issue ~ not what I found to be true, however). KsCD had no problem playing CD, however, after running alsa config/mixer. Still get artsd soundserver error upon user login though.

Comment 16 MARCO VICTOR HERMETO 2006-02-26 16:14:04 UTC
I have the same problem!
Comment 17 Sergio Polini 2006-02-28 11:34:01 UTC
I had the same problem (HP dv5078, AMD Turion 64, Gentoo AMD 64, KDE 3.4.2, arts 1.4.2).
However, I noticed that "emerge kdebase" did not installed arts, so I emerged arts _after_ kdelibs.
As to artsd crashing and causing signal 11, I have:
-- re-emerged arts, kdelibs, kdebase, and kdemultimedia in this order;
-- removed all mcop-* and kde-* directories from /tmp;
-- rebooted (I don't know if it was really needed...);
and all started working well. Nearly ;-)
As to ogg v/ wav sound files, I didn't hear any sounds when they were .ogg; I've reconfigured System Sound to use wav files and now I can hear them.
KsCD and Xine work well too.
HTH
Comment 18 Greg John Goodsir 2006-03-04 05:31:38 UTC
I have get a very similar error as comment #1. It happens everytime I start a KDE session. I am also using artsd 1.4.2 and KDE 3.4. This started after I upgraded from Mandriva 10.2 Limited edition 2005 to Mandriva 2006 10.2.
After the initial error at startup all my sounds and notifications seem to function normally though.
There is no backtrace available. The error window informs me that it might have been affected or corrupted to with the crash.
Comment 19 Greg John Goodsir 2006-03-04 05:39:47 UTC
With the last comment I said I am getting a very similar error to comment #1. I really meant the comment in the initial bug report. ie "Soundserver (artsd) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV)¨.
Comment 20 Mark Archuleta 2006-05-14 01:53:14 UTC
I am running oss and my distro is SuSE 10.0 kernel 2.6.13-15.8-default
KDE version 3.5.2 Level "a"
I have removed Kmix and started using artsd but same error. PLEASE NEED ASSISTANCE.
Here is the Backtrace.
Thanks

i'am having problem with the KDE sound server. like other it just report crashes caused by the signal 11 (sigdev). how can i get my sound server back? i use SUSE 10.0 with KDE ver 3.4. if somebody have a solution please share in this website.thanks
Comment 23 Greg John Goodsir 2006-06-13 06:42:41 UTC
I am not getting anymore arts server crashes since I installed a new version of Mandriva. I am not certain if it is an arts upgrade that has fixed it or some other dependent file, but the version is: arts-1.4.2-2mdk and upgraded to KDE 3.4.2. I upgraded with the Mandriva One live CD. Not running from the CDROM but installed on my hard drive.

I'm posting the backtrace as a courtesy in case it helps anyone. I'm a Linux noob running Fedora Core 5, GNOME 2.14 (Yeah, I just switched to GNOME session from KDE to try it out). I'm still trying to figure out how to determine what kernel I'm running. Sorry!

The KDE Crash Handler popped up when I was midway through the first song I was listening to on XMMS. XMMS continued playing until 42 seconds into the second song.

Anyhow, here's the backtrace:

*Every* time that KDE tries to play a "beep", I get the
SIGSEGV crash.

This is on a Dell D830 running an up-to-date Fedora Core 7.
However, this problem has been persistent since the original
FC7 install.

Michael, kde-3.5.8 is now available for F-7, please update, to see if that helps.

Comment 32 Matt Rogers 2008-11-19 23:37:58 UTC
Arts is no longer developed and has been unmaintained for quite some time - more than 2 years. With phonon as the replacement for arts in KDE4, we're closing out all the arts bugs in Bugzilla since there is no chance of them being fixed.

Thanks
