A picture is worth a thousand words... please see attachment.

It would be beneficial from an aesthetic perspective, that the "list-indicators" ( ie., the +/- boxes, dotted connecting lines, and indentation )didn't "block out" the existing background.

Fixed in KDE4, QTreeView has its own implementation of alternate row colors now, which works correctly.
