Description Nick Talbott 2004-08-31 10:42:12 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
Compiler: gcc 3.3.2
OS: Linux

Sometimes the message display panel does not display content when selecting an email in the message list. I've not observed a pattern yet, but it seems to happen most frequently after manually applying message filters to a number of emails in the inbox on my IMAP server account.)

The message preview panel remains empty whichever message is selected. (Double-clicking the message displays
it correctly in a separate window.)

Normal functioning of the message preview panel can be restored by selecting a different message folder then returning to the folder that was failing to preview messages.

I receive a lot of mail - typically 350 a day and currently 557 messages in IMAP inbox. I am seeing the fault three or four times a day.

I can confirm this phenomenon, however I got no pattern to offer either.

I am not sure about this, sometimes it works after some time, or for just a
few messages but not for others.

I see this since my first 3.3.0 install, do not know about the betas though. I
do not have that many messages a day but more in my imap-folder.

Comment 2 Nick Talbott 2004-09-01 10:24:33 UTC
Correction to initial report: switching to a different folder and back only sometimes fixes display. Sometimes just selecting a different message in the same folder works.
Comment 3 bruce.lilly 2004-10-28 21:17:07 UTC
I see this also (v. 1.7.1, Linux); some additional information:

It probably isn't specific to use of Kmail filters; I have none (filtering is handled via Sieve on the IMAP server side).

It is (much) worse if the taskbar applet is enabled.

Sometimes selecting another message or another folder works; eventually preview stops working altogether. Exiting Kmail (including taskbar applet if enabled) and restarting restores preview functionality.
Comment 4 Anders E. Andersen 2004-12-02 17:20:25 UTC
I can confirm it on KDE 3.3.1 in Debian/Unstable. Sometimes switching to a new mail or even another folder will bring it back to working order. However sometimes you need to restart KMail to get it to work again.

I use strictly IMAP, and no filters.

I can confirm this on one Debian/Sid machine (KMail 1.7.1) only with my IMAP Account. I have an pop3 account in the same kmail an it never happens there.

On another Debian/Sid machine (also KMail 1.7.1) this problem nevers show up although I'm connection to the same IMAP account and I'm also using another pop3 account.

On both machines I'm using the taskbar applet. Actually I can tell no difference between these two computer (actually the only difference is, that on one computer it's working and on the other it's not).

I can confirm this on two Debian/sid machines (KMail 1.7.1/KDE 3.3.1):

As mentioned above the problem only appears with IMAP accounts, i don't experience this problem with POP3 accounts.
Comment 8 Tom Albers 2004-12-06 13:10:14 UTC
Can anyone confirm this bug with kde 3.3.2, when that is released?
Comment 9 Tom Albers 2004-12-08 19:16:48 UTC
*** Bug 94652 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Comment 10 Al Muckart 2004-12-14 00:28:19 UTC
I can confirm this bug on the following platform:
Kontact 1.0.1
KMail 1.7.1
KDE 3.3.1
FreeBSD (i386) release 5.3-STABLE
gcc version 3.4.2 [FreeBSD] 20040728

I use IMAP (courier on the server), I have no filters defined in kmail at all - the filtering is all done by procmail on the server, with mail being delivered by procmail directly into the different folders on my server.

This affects all folders with a high degree of reproducability, no just the inbox. Any folder that has mail delivered to it while I am reading a message in the preview pane results in the preview pane going blank until I select a different message. I can then move back to the message I was reading Ok - until more mail is delivered.

confirming on linux fedora core 3 i386 with KDE 3.3.2
problem with mails on IMAP. no problem with mails stored locally.
Comment 12 Tom Albers 2004-12-14 09:41:50 UTC
Last weekend the KMail-team has worked to get this resolved. Which it is right now.
The tagging for kde 3.3.2 was already done, so some distribution will pick it up later on.
Debian users should upgrade to kdepim-3.3.1-3, which was packaged last sunday, and that will contain the fix.
Comment 13 Adrian von Bidder 2004-12-15 08:38:47 UTC
Either the bug is not fixed, or the bug fix didn't make it into Debian 3.3.1-3, or I need to update some other package besides kmail and kdepim.

Any ideas?
Comment 14 Anders E. Andersen 2004-12-15 09:54:09 UTC
Wait a couple of days, do another update. Wait some more, see if it still doesn't work.. Then complain again..

I just got the -3 packages yesterday, so I think it is too early to say either way. I seem to remember seeing the problem yesterday after the upgrade, but I wasn't aware that there was this fix, so I might have still been running the previous version.

But I will look out for it.
Comment 15 Adeodato Simó 2004-12-15 14:15:12 UTC
Sorry guys but the fix didn't make into Debian's kdepim 3.3.1-3. There was a small discoordination between members of the packaging team and we ended up without including it.
Comment 16 Chris Smith 2004-12-29 19:41:31 UTC
Confirmed on a Gentoo system with KDE 3.3.2 and Kmail 1.7.2. Blank preview pane about 65% of the time. Very annoying. All folders are IMAP. Had no such issue until the upgrade to 3.3.2.
Comment 17 Sergei Gnezdov 2004-12-30 09:17:15 UTC
Preview panel stops working on FreeBSD with KDE 3.3.2 and KMail 1.7.2 against IMAP account (fastmail.fm). It seems to be consistent. Workaround: reopen application.
Comment 18 Timo Springmann 2004-12-30 09:24:22 UTC
After upgrading to KDE 3.3.2 on my debian/sid machine kmail seems to work correct.
Comment 19 Bruno 2005-01-01 15:32:48 UTC
I can confirm it as well for KDE 3.3.2 on Gentoo. Most of the time the preview fails, need to select another mail and come back to see the wanted mail. (Attachements loaded immediately)

Loading attachments on demand makes preview permanently failing for all emails with attachments. The other mails tend to show up as expected. In addition, loading attachments on demand does not load headers of the attachments => bad encoding for text/html parts.
Comment 20 paul.leopardi 2005-01-02 00:16:39 UTC
I can confirm with Kmail 1.7.2 (Using KDE 3.3.2 Level 'a' unoffical build of SUSE). In addition, sometimes the message list for an IMAP folder does not display. Is there any way to change the status of this bug from 'FIXED' ?

Comment 21 Anders E. Andersen 2005-01-02 04:54:04 UTC
No! This bug is fixed!

If you guys could just take the time to read Tom Albers comment above, you would notice that:

"The tagging for kde 3.3.2 was already done, so some distribution will pick it up later on."

In other words:

This bug still exists in KDE 3.3.2, but is fixed in CVS. So unless your distro has applied the patch to their KDE packages (Debian has as of 3.3.1-4), then this bug still affects you. I am using Debian unstable, and KMail works fine for me now.
Comment 22 paul.leopardi 2005-01-02 13:12:01 UTC
Thanks for the explanation. I didn't know that all the tagging jargon meant
that the bug fix was missed by 3.3.2.

After a few days usage of KDE PIM built from CVS (tagged as KDE_3_3_BRANCH), I realize that I still see:
1) Sometimes IMAP folder appears empty (when it is not).
2) Sometimes when IMAP folder does not appear empty, preview appears empty except for header.
3) Sometimes clicking on message in IMAP folder opens message, even when preview appears empty.
4) Sometimes clicking on message in IMAP folder throws up a message box to the effect that the message contents is being downloaded. This message box just stays there and apparently there is no network activity, so it looks like something is hanging somewhere.

Bug 88511 is supposed to have been fixed in CVS.
Maybe the fix has not been backported to KDE_3_3_BRANCH? Maybe I am seeing a different bug and should file a new bug report?
Comment 24 Anders E. Andersen 2005-01-26 23:15:14 UTC
Well.. Sounds like the same bug. Though some of your points could possibly be expained. 1) Could possibly be a result of having a bit of a slow connection. 2) Sounds like this bug. 3) I am always able to open the message in question, even when the preview pane is empty. 4) Hmm.. Haven't seen anything like this. Again could it be that your connection is strained?

To be honest, I am not fully convinced that this has been fixed myself. I could swear I have seen this even efter the patched packages have gone into unstable. Still I can't remember having problems recently.

Comment 25 paul.leopardi 2005-01-27 15:09:49 UTC
Slow connection is a possibility, although not at my end. I'm using 1.5 Mb/s ADSL on Telstra Bigpond. At the server end, the IMAP server is at UNSW School of Mathematics, attached to AARNET. In between, the connection is between Telstra and Optus.

One thing I did not mention is that I have two workstations which both connect to the same IMAP login on the server, one at home and one at the university. Both of these do interval mail checking.

I quite often see IMAP "connection closed unexpectedly" messages or similar, but there seems little correlation between the time of these messages and the time of appearance of bugs 1..4.

Perhaps the protocol state machine is being pushed into a dead end or a deadlock? In this case, why isn't there a watchdog timer and retry mechanism? Or maybe there is a watchdog timer, but it operates on a timescale of half-hours rather than seconds? Just guessing...
Comment 26 Anders E. Andersen 2005-02-12 23:19:47 UTC
I have not had any problems with this for a while. I will remove my votes from this bug now.
