Description Hugo Costelha 2004-08-20 16:19:41 UTC
Version: 1.7 (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

In previous versions of KMail I could not send messages only to BCC, I had to put something on the CC field, but know I can. However, when I type a Distribution List in the BCC field (only) I get a dialog that says
" Sending failed:

...5.0.0 Need RCPT (recipient)..."

and the message stayus in the outbox folder. When I open the message from the outbox folder I realise that it has no recipients, it ignored the distributions lists.

Summarizing, kmail 1.7 ignores any Distribution Lists that we put on the BCC field, which didn't happen before and it his a really pain in the ass for me to have to select all the names each time I send an e-mail.

Nevertheless, congratulations for all the great improvements and good work on this latest release.

Distribution lists are no longer expanded. I guess someone has re-introduced an old bug.
Comment 2 Hugo Costelha 2004-09-08 19:00:37 UTC
Well, they don't work only in the BCC field which is rather strange, because If I use them in the CC field everything works as usual.

I can confirm this bug: any distribution list I put in the BCC field is silently ignored. This caused me a lot of trouble this week until I figured out what was happening!

i can also confirm this bug.

Matt and I just spent a few hours trying to track this down; I created a distribution list called "feem" for the purpose. One place I paid particular attention to is slotContinueDoSend(), since that's where KMMessage::expandAliases is called for the to() and cc() fields, as well as originalBCC() if needed. I added an expansion of bcc() there as well, and I can see it being expanded, returning the right values for the list "feem", but then none of the addresses that yields actually show up when talking to the mail server (or sendmail). Here's a snippet of sendmail log from a message with a to:matt and a bcc:adridg:

Sep 22 23:01:13 beans sendmail[28698]: i8ML1D9A028698: to=adridg@kontact.fruitsalad.org,matt@fruitsalad.org, ctladdr=adridg@kontact.fruitsalad.org (1001/1001),delay=00:00:00,

and similarly if i set bcc: feem (which i can see being expanded in kmail's debug output)

ep 22 23:00:11 beans sendmail[28684]: i8ML0BgH028684: from=adridg@kontact.fruitsalad.org, size=343, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<200409222300.11000.adridg@kontact.fruitsalad.org>, relay=localhost [[UNIX: localhost]]

see, nuthin'.

Fixed for KDE 3.3.1.

I still have this problem with KDE 3.3.2 and KMail 1.7.2 with Kontact 1.0.2 on SuSE 9.1 using SuSE rpms. Distribution lists work in the TO and CC fields, but do not work in the BCC field.
