Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.3) Installed from: RedHat RPMs OS: Linux -export LANG=en_US.UTF-8 -fire up konsole -select MiscFixed as font -less http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/ucs/examples/UTF-8-demo.txt And scroll to the bottom, to the "Greetings in various languages:", the last greeting has a space between all the chars, this space shouldn't be there and it isn't there in for example kwrite (when using MiscFixed as font)
Can you try this using KDE 3.4.x? A lot has changed since 3.2.x
Still there in 3.4.0
Viewing the file in KDE 3.5, the kwrite and konsole version look almost the same. I don't see the spaces you mention. If you can try KDE 3.5 and provide a screenshot, it would be helpful. I'm using Encoding->utf8
I'm still seeing the spaces with 3.4.92 (latest kde in redhat rawhide) I've attached a screenshot. I must say that UTF8 rendering does look quite bad in 3.4.92 all over. At the right bottom of the screenshot you can see for example what the boxdrawing aligment should look like all 3 progs (konsole, kwrite and xterm) are using MiscFixed as font. Also konsole seems to have redrawing issues if you scroll up with shift+page up after doing a cat UTF-8-demo.txt and then scroll down again and up again you see the ||| ||| from the math formulas all over the place. See screenshot-1. Kwrite has the part of UTF-8-demo that contains the math formulas where the ||| come from. Also in xterm you can see what this part of UTF-8-demo should look like when displayed properly. Notice the aligment issues in the box around the euro test and notice the missing combining stuff in after the stargate text.

Output appears correct in Konsole for KDE 4, as in the output of the window at the bottom right-hand corner of the "spaces" screenshot. Not sure when this got fixed, but it did.
