Description Jim Ronback 2004-07-27 10:53:50 UTC
Version: unknown (using KDE 3.2.2, (testing/unstable))
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.3 (Debian 20040401)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.26

The two drivers provided with Knoppix 3.2.2 do not work for a HP 1000 printer on a USB port. I suspect it is a winprinter that needs a "rom" (?) download on startup. I had no problem configuring my Epson Stylus Photo 700.

There a few HP printees with number 1000, see:

Have a nice day!

The printer is a HP Laserjet 1000 which needs firmware to be uploaded to the printer on startup. The version of Knoppix is the latest available version 3.4.2004-5-17 - downloaded on July 27. The platform is AMD. Thanks

Ah, good so this page applies:

Have a nice day!

kconfigure has nothing to do with printers.
Comment 5 Jim Ronback 2004-07-29 07:40:57 UTC
The bug does not go away just because the wrong component was identified!
What is the related component that is used to configure printers that need to have its firmware loaded, e.g., HP Laserjet 1000?

Let's move it to "kdeprint". (However I am not sure if it does such hardware stuff either.)

Have a nice day!

This is something I cannot test myself. But my main advise would be to check that foomatic (http://www.linuxprinting.org) and foo2zjs (http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com) are correctly installed, especially concerning the foo2zjs-wrapper script and the firmware. I cannot do more from KDEPrint's point of view. Just for the record, you may try to install the printer using the "foomatic-configure" tool, but this is should be equivalent to installation through KDEPrint tool. In this case, I doubt that KDEPrint is directly related to your problem.
Please close the bug if you agree.
Comment 8 XOS3.0 Dummy 2005-08-09 11:41:52 UTC
I'm a new user of XOS3 and am ready to switch fully from w2k when I encounter problems getting HP Laserjet 1000 to work. I tried all the links and forum in HP, linuxprinting, Xos, but none works so far. My best attempt so far is trying from this link:

http://linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_1000.

When I do this command from console: # cat sihp1000.img > /dev/usb/lp0
I can see the yellow light of the HP 1000 blinking.

During test print, the queue went away but didn't print (hardcopy).

For other installation methods the queue stay there.

Any more better idea?

If I can't overcome this, either i buy a new printer or I gave up Xos or linux.

Ciao.

Try to get support from http://www.linuxprinting.org/forums.cgi (there are a few newsgroup there), or from XOS. This problem is a general printer setup problem, not directly related to KDE. I don't use such a printer, so I can't test anything. I cannot do more than sending you to more appropriate support locations. You can also try on the kde-print@kde.org mailing list.

I'm pretty sure your printer *can* work under Linux, but it's tricky because it was mainly targeted for Windows platform.

Michael.

UNCONFIRMED (batch reassigning messed this)
Comment 11 Cristian Tibirna 2005-09-24 06:42:12 UTC
I will have to close this as wontfix. This is a linux issue, not a kdeprint specific issue. There are people much more talented than me that are taking care of drivers. When they become available, kdeprint will use them no problem.

Closing old Resolved status bug.
