Description mi+kde 2004-07-22 19:49:47 UTC
Version: 3.2.3 (using KDE 3.2.3, compiled sources)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.3 [FreeBSD] 20031106
OS: FreeBSD (i386) release 5.2-CURRENT

I'd very much like a (per incoming mail server) option to tell KMail to stop checking for new messages, disconnect from the IMAP/POP/whatever server, and shut down the (perpetually buggy) kio_imap4 (or kio_pop3) process once it notices -- through
X-server -- that I'm not here.
Once I'm back, KMail should reconnect to all servers and start checking mail
at the specified interval again.

Instant Messaging clients have this functionality -- they can automaticly set
the "away" state after a certain period of idleness. Obviously, screen-savers manage to notice me going away too.

I'm using my own somewhat underpowered IMAP-server, and don't want it to be
interrogated all night every 5 minutes...

Mail-service providers will certainly appreciate this feature and will be more
likely to recommend KMail to their users, because it will reduce the average
load on their servers -- especially, if this option's checkbox is on by default.

I have also requested the same feature from Mozilla developers:

I wonder, who gets to it first... Thank you!

Looks like another duplicate of [Bug 7765] Online/offline, no?

Mmm, no. I'm talking about Mozilla _automaticly_ noticing, I'm gone -- without the user pressing a button, which everyone will forget to do anyway.

Screen-savers do this, IM-clients do this, Mozilla should do this.

s/Mozilla/KDE/g

sorry :-)

That's nice, but this is KMail ;)
Comment 5 Björn Ruberg 2009-12-19 22:57:08 UTC
I wouldn't want that. If I don't want mails to be checked than I close the application. If it is still open it should continue fetchign mail. Maybe I'm away working somewhere else or watching a film - but I maybe want still get notified about important mail via a sound signal.

I guess it'd be best to have a checkbox (per mail server) to say whether KMail should care about the away mode or not.

Ah.. sorry, forgot to add..

I generally agree with Bjorn, though. If you decided it's too much bothering with the checkboxes (meaning - the new functionality, aware of the away status, would have to be always enabled), it's definitely better to let it stay the way it is now.

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.

Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
