Description Alex 2004-07-11 20:50:15 UTC
Version:           3.2.0 (using KDE 3.2 BRANCH >= 20040204, Mandrake Linux Cooker i586 - Cooker)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.2 (Mandrake Linux 10.0 3.3.2-6mdk)
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.6.3-7mdk

The option "Show Previews in File Tips" does not work properly. When I check "Show File Tips" and "Show Previews in File Tips", and then move my mouse over any file (that I know can be previewed). It immediately shows all the file info and a small preview. Cool, I think.
BUT as soon as I close the konqueror window, and open up another one, I get no file preview. Only the file info shows up (as if the "Show Previews in File Tips" option is not selected. I open up Konqueror's propreties again. The square is checked. I don't understand. I uncheck and check it again, and click apply. Now I move my mouse over a file. Works fine, shows the preview etc. Until I restart konqueror that is. I have tried to check / uncheck the "Use thumbnails embedded in files" and the "Increase size of previewsrelative to icons" boxes in "previews & meta-data". Same result. I have even tried to save the profile as "File Management" and as custom profile, and then loading it. I have tried configuring konqueror though the Contorl Center. It resets after each restart of the app. My first thought, which seems apparent, is that it doesn't write to the config file propperly, but it does, since the box "Show Previews in File Tips" is checked. It just doesn't display it.
What really puzzled me, was that the files on my desktop were previewed, but not in other directories...
Any ideas, people?

I just discovered that you don't even need to restart konqueror, just change directory for it to stop wirking...

is this still an issue for you Alex?

It happens to me in Konqueror 3.4.2. Tried playing with the.kde/share/config/konquerorrc file. Removed lines to do with filetips. Went into konqueror configure menu and unchecked and rechecked "Show File Tips" and "Show Previews in File Tips". Now, file tips don't work at all. If I log in as root and start kde, file tips work fine. Feels like a configuration file problem. What other config files can control file tip behavior? Maybe something cached somewhere? I quit kde, renamed my .kde directory and restarted kde. With the newly generated .kde directory, file tips work again.

You guys can't be for real... I post a bug on the 11th of july in 2004 and you guy reply on the first of november, 2005 - more than a year later and ask me if it's still an issue? That's friggin' hilarious :P
No, it's not an issue longer, since I don't use KDE (or linux for that matter) any more...but keep up the good work (on KDE that is, not the support :P )

Found the problem to be in the ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals file. Found [KDE] EffectNoTooltip=true. Set it to false and tooltips came back. Found [PreviewSettings] file=false. Set it to true and previews in tooltips came back. Then went to Control Center -> KDE Components -> File Manager. On Behavior tab, "Show previews in file tips" was unchecked even though they actually were being shown. Checked it and applied and things still seem to be working ok.

This just works for me, KDE 3.5.4 on Kubuntu 6.06
