Umbrello currently only supports asynchronous messages and 
message-to-self. It would be desirable to have synchronous messages
between user selectable objects in the sequence diagram.

Huh?  Both asynchronous and synchronous messages are both possible as message to self or message to another object.

Wha! Forget it. It works now for me.
(Maybe it had something to do with the way I clicked the mouse.)
