Description JW 2004-05-28 15:21:01 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.90)
Installed from: Unspecified Linux
Compiler: gcc 3.4
OS: Linux

Almost every time I reboot my system most of the Favicons disapear in the bookmarks.

The default favicons (globe looking) stay. But the others disapear. Today I had only 1 Favicon left (apart from the default glob favicon used with many bookmarks).

I am now using kde 3.3 alpha1, it was the same with kde 3.2.2.

Also, update Favicons (in the bookmarks editor) is flacky. It starts updating 4 or 5 favicons and then stops; but when I manually update each favicon it works. (Then, when I reboot, the favicons are lost gain).
Comment 1 Stephan Kulow 2004-05-28 15:40:21 UTC
I've got the same. For me this is because the reboot cleans up /tmp and favicons are in cache.
Comment 2 Stephan Binner 2004-05-28 15:47:31 UTC
Why are your favicons not stored in /var/tmp/kdecache-coolo/favicons? :-)
Comment 3 Stephan Kulow 2004-05-28 19:41:34 UTC
/var/tmp _is_ tmp
Comment 4 JW 2004-05-28 22:09:51 UTC
Yes, my tmp is also cleaned at each reboot.

Why aren't the favicons stored with the bookmarks is the home folder ?

http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#PURPOSE50

"/var/tmp : Temporary files preserved between system reboots

Purpose

The /var/tmp directory is made available for programs that require temporary files or directories that are preserved between system reboots. Therefore, data stored in /var/tmp is more persistent than data in /tmp.

Files and directories located in /var/tmp must not be deleted when the system is booted. Although data stored in /var/tmp is typically deleted in a site-specific manner, it is recommended that deletions occur at a less frequent interval than /tmp."

If you have a broken system that deletes /var/tmp at every reboot then you
can symlink ~/.kde/cache-$HOSTNAME to a location other than /var/tmp.
Comment 6 Stephan Kulow 2004-06-03 09:09:03 UTC
so they disappear less frequent, but they disapppear!
favicons in general are fine to be deleted, but those used in bookmarks are part of the GUI and shouldn't disappear!
Comment 7 lypanov 2004-06-03 09:42:39 UTC
same for cache files. users don't expect them to disappear unless
they actually click "empty cache". i'd say this is a flaw in the
standard that waldo referenced, or in your distro if they are
"disappearing" on occasions. in any case, its not favicon specific
its just the behaviour of /var/tmp that is flawed here.

I can confirm that this extremely annoying issue is present in 3.3 Beta2. I am hoping that we can ship 3.3 Final with favicons behaving sensibly.

How about embedding the favicons for the bookmarks in the bookmarks file or somewhere - basically outside the cache? It would then be periodically compared to the favicon on the website when it will needed to be re-fetched from the website.

Hello,

I'd like to comment more on this bug too. I had the same issue. I manually changed /var/tmp to /tmp because the pseudo temporary /var/tmp was starting to take too much disk space, and then the problem appeared.

I also think that the favicons should not be stored in /var/tmp 's cache, as they are more related to the bookmarks than the pages themselves, when we talk about the Bookmark menus.

two (useful?) backtraces
Comment 12 Dawud Medina 2008-07-08 21:28:29 UTC
Hi there. I had a crash today while updating favicons. I copied a backtrace and reproduce the error, so up there you have two (useful?) backtraces. Any additional info, just ask for it. I'll be glad to contribute.

Message from the Bugsquad and Konqueror teams:
This bug is closed as outdated, as we do not have the manpower to maintain the KDE3 version anymore.
If you still can reproduce this issue with Konqueror 4.8.4 or later, please open a new report.
Thank you for your understanding.
