Description Eduardo Robles Elvira 2004-05-27 14:22:16 UTC
Version: 3.0.3 (using KDE KDE 3.2.2)
Installed from: RedHat RPMs

Kdevelop crashes when closing session (log out).

The desktop I'm using is KDE and the distro is FC1. It's been happening here since Kdevelop 3.0.0. When logging out, I can see a crash window about kdevelop just second(s) before X is restarted.

Reproducible: Always.
Expected Behaviour: It shouldn't crash.

Need more info ? Ask for it and I'll provide it whenever I can :-).
Comment 1 Jens Dagerbo 2004-05-28 18:43:07 UTC
>Need more info ?

Well, yes, obviously. Without a backtrace this is just another "it crashed!" report. (And I've started just closing those, it's just noise.)

Please provide a backtrace of the crash.
Comment 2 Eduardo Robles Elvira 2004-05-28 22:08:23 UTC
Jen Dagerbo:

Hi, I've managed to save a log of the console output by executing in the "Execute command" dialog kdevelop that redirect the error and console outputs to a file. The output is the attached file to this bug. I paste all the output because there are other errors that happen at startup time, and who knows, maybe they're related to the bug we're dealing with.

I've been trying to get more info. I'm not familiar with gdb, and I don't know how could I get the backtrace you want, because as I've already mentioned, a crash window _is_ showed but guess what: as KDE is already clossing session, I have no time to see the backtrace nor save it. If you know how to workaround that problem, please tell me and I'd try your solution Jens!

Sorry, I missde something to say:

I'd suggest you to try to reprodue the bug, because it's not random at all. Setimes you can barely see the crash window because KDE closes faster, but I belive that kdevelop always crashes. Moreover, that way you can easily try in real-time your own techniches to get the backtrace.

BTW, I've noticed the bug is ussually shown when kwin has already been closed (so you cannot see the window title bars).
Comment 5 Jens Dagerbo 2004-07-17 03:00:08 UTC
I just tried this and I got no crash. This was a freshly started X session and I had just started KDevelop and loaded a project and then closed KDE.

It's probably different when you've been working for hours on dozens of files and KDevelop takes a while to close.

The obvious workaround would be to close KDevelop before logging out of KDE. ;)

I'm getting this crash too on SUSE 9.2 with KDevelop 3.2.0 and the latest KDE 3.4 RPMs from ftp.suse.com. It's completely reproducable for me, happens every time (with a large custom project loaded on session close).

I also have this happen every time I close the session, and kdevelop is not closed first.

backtrace not available, it tells me the backtrace fails.

I have the same here, kdevelop-3.2.2 / KDE-3.4.1 / Athlon-XP / Gentoo
maybe this is a duplicate of #83352 ?
Comment 11 Jens Dagerbo 2005-08-07 19:13:24 UTC
I managed to reproduce it as well. Pretty much the same backtrace (this is with kdelibs from 3.5 branch):

Comment 12 Kevin C. 2005-08-11 21:55:39 UTC
Please fix this crash. Anyway, my KDevelop still keeps on crashing. It crashed with Fedora Core 3 KDevelop. I did a complete uninstall of KDE (everything including KDE Development suite). Then I used Synaptics to install the latest version of KDE suite and KDE Development suite. I still get the same KDevelop crash. It happens when you leave KDevelop open when you log out of session. All other applications are find, just KDevelop problem.

Below is the crash log:

Comment 14 Yevgen Muntyan 2006-02-24 05:34:48 UTC
It crashes here too: kdevelop-3.2.2, kde-3.5.1, debian testing.
It's incredibly inconvenient since crash handler blocks logout, so to shut laptop down I need to either close kdevelop, then log out, or use shutdown in terminal (once laptop has been turned on in my backpack for an hour because of this, it got really hot).
Comment 15 Marcel Martin 2006-03-04 01:03:56 UTC
Same problem here with KDevelop 3.3.1 on KDE 3.5.1 (Gentoo packages). The backtrace is similar (omitted).

I just saw this as well. For me, it doesn't happen every time, but after some time editing and building, I got a crash.

I also have this bug with KDevelop 3.3.2 on KDE3.5.4 on Debian Testing, using IDEAI interface, and have experienced this behaviour ever since I installed the system 1.5 years ago, with almost daily updates.

I've been testing this with the latest kdevelop 3.4 revision 606047 from svn and have been unable to reproduce. This is on kde 3.5.5.

I've tried:
- the Simplified IDEA window mode, and IDEA window mode.
- with subversion support and without. (NOTE: you must use kdesdk-ioslaves, not the kdesvn-ioslave)
- a project open or closed
- with tabs open or closed.
- after building/debugging

Can someone that is having the problem try again?

I've tested this in my kubuntu Edgy with KDE 3.5.5 and kdevelop 3.3.4 and it doesn't seem to arise any more. Anyone else still getting it?
Comment 29 Patrick Matthäi 2006-11-19 12:56:10 UTC
Seems to be fixxed with KDE 3.5.5 here.

Crash backtrace

I have kdevelop 3.3.5 on KDE 3.5.5 and I'm still getting a crash. To reproduce
this, I opened kdevelop, opened a project, then opened a couple of files using
the file selector, and immediately hit logout.

If it makes any difference, I have no confirmation on logout.
Comment 31 Jens Dagerbo 2006-11-19 15:56:34 UTC
This was fixed in 3.4 branch a few weeks back.
Comment 32 Giovanni Venturi 2006-11-19 17:17:42 UTC
Ok, but was it backported? You cannot close this bug if the backport hasn't be
done.
Comment 33 Jens Dagerbo 2006-11-19 17:36:07 UTC
Fine. Let's hope someone backports it.
Comment 34 Matt Rogers 2006-11-19 17:50:38 UTC
Excuse me?!? This bug is fixed. It doesn't matter which version it's fixed in, so I can close the bug whenever I want. k? thanks.
Comment 35 Dietmar Hofer 2007-04-17 18:53:24 UTC
I'm running a fresh openSUSE 10.2 with KDE 3.5.5 "release 45" and kdevelop 3.3.5.
I get this crash on every shutdown. Do I understand well that it should already be fixed in my version?
Comment 36 Maciej Pilichowski 2007-04-17 18:58:13 UTC
> I'm running a fresh openSUSE 10.2 with KDE 3.5.5 "release 45" and kdevelop
> 3.3.5.

"Fresh" does not mean "latest", right?

> Do I understand well that it should already be fixed in my version?

Why should be? Developers fixed this in the latest version, not every KDevelop version currently used.

I use opensuse 10.2 too but with KDE 3.5.6, with KDevelop 3.3.94 and I didn't see crash for a looong time. Solution for you --> upgrade!

Comment 37 Dietmar Hofer 2007-04-18 11:31:48 UTC
I understand that it can't be fixed in every version. I'm just trying to understand when/where exactly the bugfix was done.
Above I read:
a) "Seems to be fixxed with KDE 3.5.5 here."
and
b) "This was fixed in 3.4 branch a few weeks back."
and
c) "KDE 3.5.6, with KDevelop 3.3.94"
(a) alone seems not enough since I also have it, (c) contradicts (b) (?)

Before considering an upgrade I want to know what exactly I have to upgrade to which version.
Comment 38 Andreas Pakulat 2007-04-18 11:43:27 UTC
You need to update KDevelop to 3.4.0 or later (that is compile yourself from svn).

b) doesn't contradict c) as 3.3.94 is a snapshot of the 3.4 svn at some point (IIRC its beta2)
