Description colesen 2004-05-16 00:31:49 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.2)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

I wish for Konqueror as file manager to support a mechanism by which a non-privileged user temporarily can obtain the privilege to access privileged directories and files.

Example. When I download a program from the web I usually download it to my home directory where I first evaluate it. If I then decide to keep it then I move it /opt - also to prevent it from accidently being deleted. Others may use /usr/local. Both are privileged directories. I prefer to run as a non-privileged user to prevent accidents but in cases like this I need temporary elevated privilege in order to move the program to /opt. If I try as a non-privileged user then Konqueror launches a popup saying "Access denied". I wish for Konqueror instead to support a mechanism by which I temporarily but on-the-fly can get the required privilege - like prompt me for the (root) password - that will allow the operation to complete normally.

As is, my only other options are to launch and use another instance of Konqueror with sufficient privileges - either by using "su" from a console, or the "super user" Konqueror in the main menu or by logging out and in as root and later back again. But I'm in context with my current instance of Konqeuror and don't want to launch and ready another instance.
