Version: 0.8.0 (using KDE 3.2 BRANCH >= 20040204, Mandrake Linux Cooker i586 - Cooker) Compiler: gcc version 3.3.2 (Mandrake Linux 10.0 3.3.2-6mdk) OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.3-4mdk Will audio and video be implemented for jabber protocol or the current authors don't feel it is a necessary option as a lot of people think ?
We'd need another piece of software for this that does the audio/video part which we can integrate into Kopete easily, like a KPart or something. Since the same bug exists for other protocols, I guess this should eventually be made a part of libkopete. Implementation of a full-featured audio/video chatclient within the plugin itself will not be done.
but does jabber support any kind of audio or video ? If not ? to which layer that would apply ? within kopete users only ?
See: https://jabber.helixcommunity.org/ and http://delta.affinix.com/
We're making use of Iris, so if Justin is going to add that there, we'll have it as well.
Have you talk with the psi team about this feature ? on the psi agenda plan (http://delta.affinix.com/ ) the next version have audio and video support.

I believe that there isn't any JEP which handles multimedia. Therefore, this isn't a KDE issue but a jabber issue. After all, KDE can't implement protocols that don't exist.
I'll mark this as WONTFIX because work on the Jabber/Helix project has been stopped. It won't be implemented anytime soon. It's definitely on my list, so if a possibility arises, I'll add support to the plugin but right now there's no timeframe associated to it.
accoring to jeps 166 167 and 180, there is some new fresh development in this area, kopete should handle jingle protocol at last according to its wiki http://wiki.kde.org/tiki-index.php?page=Kopete+Jabber+Jingle but i never achieved that, but it looks very promising
Should be reopened for the video part, I think...
Apparently Video for Jabber is working, at least Gtalk (jabber based) has video capabilities now: http://mail.google.com/videochat/?hl=en-GB Could this bug be reopened now that the technology has advanced to the point where it is possible?
This is being worked on, Kopete in KDE 4.2 will have basic support for Jabber audio (Jingle audio). It is already in trunk. I'd like to have enough time to implement Video and ICE support for KDE 4.3. Besides, I should have a look at what Google did and what version of the protocol they are using exactly as it's still at an experimental state.
Google although its brilliant support of open-source software, doesn't always implement the bleeding edge standard, for example its Google documents is said being able to export into odf, however it is (or recently was) just sxw format (openoffice 1.* native) with cool suffix.
