Description Amit Shah 2004-05-14 15:06:25 UTC
Version: 3.2.2 (using KDE 3.2.2, (testing/unstable))
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.3 (Debian 20040401)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.5

... and on changing the browser ID to IE on WinXP, it works, but later complains that no ActiveX support was found.

On changing the ID to Mozilla 1.2 on Win2000, it just shows the 'loading' screen, doesn't even go to the login screen.

See this URL for testing: https://gmail.google.com/

and? How about you ask them instead of us? They can claim whatever they want and adding bug reports here won't change that.

Hmmm. I wasn't sure if it's due to a khtml bug.

Comment 3 Robert Paskowitz 2004-06-20 09:51:06 UTC
Their claims are not incorrect, with a valid UserAgent string, the site begins to load, but Konqueror chokes badly at the javascript, and therefore users get stuck at a Loading page.

Strangely, Safari is supported by GMail:

Comment 5 Mathieu Jobin 2004-10-15 18:52:44 UTC
gmail works under 3.3.1, yes.
but not totally. I can't set a Label to a message.

I suggest to reopen.

Comment 6 Amit Shah 2004-11-04 06:51:51 UTC
I still get 'browser not supported', but when I click on 'sign in anyway', I do get signed in. This is with KDE CVS of yesterday. Reopen?
Comment 7 Stephan Kulow 2004-11-04 13:42:56 UTC
You still got the "... and on changing the browser ID to IE on WinX" part active?

It's set on 'default identification'. I'm running CVS Head.

Comment 9 Stephan Kulow 2004-11-04 16:11:30 UTC
Of course. As long as gmail doesn't include konqueror's default UA in it's list of supported browsers there is little we can do.
Comment 10 Matthew Harker 2004-12-19 23:30:51 UTC
As of KDE 3.3.2 gmail now works under konqueror somewhat. Gmail still says that konqueror is unsupported, but the gmail interface does load up more times than not now. It does sometimes stop at the "Loading..." part, but a simple refresh usually stops that from happening.

Thundercloud.
Comment 11 Mathieu Jobin 2004-12-19 23:38:48 UTC
well, when I click on a message, i can see the message to load for a single second and then I get a full blank page.

refresh, goes back to the list, clicking the message does the same thing

Comment 12 M 2005-02-14 18:18:49 UTC
This bug shouldn't be resolved, I get:

Gmail's standard view does not support your current browser.
You will be sent to the basic HTML view.
See browser requirements for Gmail's standard view

... and then it gets stuck on 'Loading'

(KDE 3.3.92 (beta2) from CVS)

@#$@#%$@% PLEASE FIX KONQUEROR TO WORK WITH GMAIL (AND ALL OTHER SITES ON THE WEB THAT WORK AT LEAST WITH FIREFOX, YES ASKING FOR IE COMPATIBILITY IS TOO MUCH OF KDE ..WHICH IN ITSELF EMULATES WIN95+), I'M USING 3.3.2 AND WHEN I SWITCH TO STANDARD VIEW, SO I CAN GO TO SETTINGS, NONE OF THE LINKS WORK, I TRIED USING SEVERAL DIFFERENT USER AGENT STRINGS, BUT THE SAME ERROR OCCURS #$^#$%#%
Comment 14 Antonio Flores 2005-05-19 10:49:35 UTC
With Version 3.4.0, when I switch to standard wiev changing identification, none of then links works, only buttons.
Comment 15 Mario A. Vazquez 2005-08-11 16:11:01 UTC
on KDE 3.4.2 (and probably 3.4.x branch) switching to Safari Browser Identification fix the non supported browser message, and the Mail directory list where mail descriptions overwrite email dates. The last one visible on Inbox, Send Items, Spam, Trash, etc,.
Comment 16 Boris Schroder 2006-02-11 22:39:46 UTC
Guys,
Konqueror needs to be made 100% compatible for Gmail and all it's future functionalities or else this browser is going to disappear.
Because you know what, there is even more web functionality through Javascript
and other technologies coming from all big web companies.
How come the Opera and Safari teams got their browser compatible and you not?
Just do it.
Comment 17 Allan Sandfeld 2006-02-12 03:10:00 UTC
Huh?
Konqueror is 100% compatible. Google needs to realize that. Please inform them rather than trolling here.
Comment 18 Boris Schroder 2006-02-16 22:50:16 UTC
I changed the useragent to anything that Gmail supports
but still I can't even click on an email, neither do I get any of the mouse-over functionality.
Comment 19 Mathieu Jobin 2006-02-16 23:36:19 UTC
ok, to use gmail with konqueror you don't need to lie on your user agent at all.

if gmail says you can't login because you are using an unsupported browsers, it is because of the two following reasons.

1 - you got the login screen cached very deeply, cuz gmail supports all browsers for a while now, and don't complain on login anymore.
2 - its because gmail was doing a check on the browser. nothing konqueror's developer could do about it.

but this is all PAST. I login onto gmail using lynx without problem. their basic HTML view works fine. although, you got to lie on your user agent to use another view than the basic one.

Boris(and others). when you login, please check

- on the top of gmail it may say "For a better Gmail experience, use a fully supported browser. Learn more" in a orange square. this is because your user agent spoofing did not work and you are using an "unsupported browser".
- if you don't see this message, you should then see "You are currently viewing Gmail in basic HTML. Switch to standard view". click on the link and things should be as you are use to. if you don't see this message on the top, it probably means you are already using the default standard view.
- if you don't see that or just to make sure, scroll to the bottom, and you should have a list of available "views". which should look like this.. "Gmail view: standard with chat | standard without chat | basic HTML Learn more"

just choose the one you prefer. the basic HTML one with links is pretty impressive. anyway.

another tip. don't spoof to be IE. IE and Gecko are very different browser. and Google will use different javascript/css for those too. and Konqueror is way more similar to Gecko in the sense that both Konqueror and Gecko respects standards. while IE, doesn't. So, if you spoof your UA to be IE, things may not work as good, cuz google will pretend you are IE. but you're not. remember ?

Boris, if you can't click on emails, nor as get mouse-over event. its because you're using the Basic HTML view. gmail works the same for me in konqueror and firefox. and I am pretty hardcore gmail user.

thank you.

Comment 20 Allan Sandfeld 2006-02-17 00:29:44 UTC
To repeat what has been stated in other bug-reports: If you wish to use the GMail basic view, either use http://mail.google.com/mail?nocheckbrowser or spoof as Firefox. Spoofing as Safari does not work. All AJAX appliations are customized to work with bugs and features of every browser they support, when using a browser they have not been customized too, odd things might happen, so try to another customization until you find one that fits your browser.

Repeat after me: There is no such thing as Standards or cross-browser functionality in Google applications.
Comment 21 Mathieu Jobin 2006-02-17 02:00:40 UTC
you don't need this address anymore Allan.

as for standards, well, i guess you miss understood what I said. but whatever..
Comment 22 Boris Schroder 2006-02-18 01:01:15 UTC
Konqueror is so good. I just want it to be perfect.
In Gmail's standard view (with or without chat) the light grey text snippets go beyond the right border of the main table table.
Date and time of the email overlaps with snippet text on the right hand side.
Label names get truncated.
The chat partners list doesn't expand to show all available people or it doesn't even load them. I can't tell. Something is not working there.

Can't you guys just work with the Gmail team to sort those things out?
I am sure they are happy to help you, especially when it's for an open source browser.

<i>> As long as gmail doesn't include konqueror's default UA in it's list of supported browsers there is little we can do.</i>

Yes, you can set Konqueror to mask as Safari, like Opera masks as MSIE to access such evil sites, but *DO NOT* include the word "Konqueror" in the user agent when accessing Gmail. When there's nothing we can do to have Google to support Konqueror, our only solution is the KDE developers to adapt (like Opera Software did). Google supports Safari, which has the same rendering engine as Konqueror, so Gmail should work with Konqueror if it identifies using the same user-agent as Safari. I think they adapt the code to meet Safari's requirements (which means KHTML's). Worth a try.
Comment 24 Mathieu Jobin 2006-12-28 01:42:16 UTC
"already done, been there"

konqueror is able to change his user agent per site basis since ages. 2.0 ?
its like it always has been there.

however, for gmail, i dont recommend setting it up as safari. gmail includes some special hacks for safari which does not work very well in konqueror, although they are both based on khtml. setting konqueror to "be" firefox is your best bet. plus firefox gets the chat feature, while safari does not.

that said, gmail is still way much nicer in firefox than konqueror.
overall I prefer konqueror, but I still have no other choice than using firefox for two reasons. (gmail and rikaichan)

plus firefox 2 reopens his tabs on crash, but thats a different subject.
