Description Pupeno 2004-05-14 00:52:30 UTC
Version: 0.7 (using KDE 3.2.1, Gentoo)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.2 20031218 (Gentoo Linux 3.3.2-r5, propolice-3.3-7)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.5-gentoo-r1

When you press "New Snapshot" in Window Under Cursor with No delay, KSnapshot window dissapears to let you choose the window (in other mothers this might happen as well, I didn't test it). When KSnapShot comes back, it always come in the middle of the scree.
It would be nice if it would come in the place where it was last (in my example, it was a place where it wasn't intrusive to take the ton of screenshots I had to make, but it ended up being very intrusive because it moved to the center).
Thank you.

In 0.5 under KDE 3.1.1 under SuSE 8.2, and older mandrake versions, the asked for behavior was the actual behavior. Since about that time, SuSE & Fedora & Mandrake versions behave as the reporter describes. http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7973 is the bug I filed for this same probem in Mandrake Cooker. Mandrake Cooker currently has 0.7 in 3.2.3.

This bug also applies to the Debian KDE packages.
Comment 4 David de Beer 2004-12-09 10:24:33 UTC
this bug seems to be solved in SuSE 9.2 / KDE 3.3.0

The bug you describe (coming back to the centre) no longer exists, so I guess it could be marked as RESOLVED.

However, Ksnapshot does not always come back where it was last, it is _smarter_ (which may mean 'more annoying' for some people).

The current (3.3.2 and 3.4.0-rc1) behaviour of Ksnapshot is as follows:
If ksnapshot did not overlap with the panel when 'new snapshot' was pressed, then it comes back in the exact position where it was last.
Otherwise, it comes back in a position which is where it was last, shifted horizontally (if panel is on the side) or vertically (if panel is on the top or bottom) to avoid any overlap with the panel.

This can be seen as a good thing to some, and an annoyance to others.

Therefore, in the spirit of KDE's ultimate configurability, I support an option 'Restore Position':
 - smart position (avoid panel overlap, as it currently does)
 - keep position (restore last exact position even if it overlaps with the panel)

Like Phillipe mentioned, this behaviour can be configured in the advanced window settings dialog of ksnapshot (window button -> Advanced -> Special Application Settings -> Geometry -> Position / Size set to 'Remember')

Completely not true. The bug still exists and it is not fixed -- could someone please reopen this report. Thanks in advance.
Ksnapshot is centered after making a snapshot.

Btw. (it is off-topic) what is wrong with overlapping? The user wants to overlap, follow the user wish.

The second thing is hacking with Advanced settings is ugly. This is not the matter of "configurability" -- it should just behave this way, I mean, if the window is hidden for a second it should come back to the same posiion. It is 100% natural.
But even if this hack would be beautiful it is not the point. the report is not about just placament, the report is about re-appearing the main window.

So, please place Ksnapshot whenever it is a good placement (I use "smart" policy), but _initially_. But just after making a snapshot, show it back at the previous position. So the advanced settings are no good.

Again, please reopen.

KDE 3.5.7 -- still there.

Where is the "window" button you speak of? I can't find this dialog at all.
How do I configure it to work this way?

It would be nice if it just remembered its geometry like all well-behaved KDE apps, so I'm adding my vote to this.
