Version:           1.6 (using KDE 3.2.0, compiled sources)
Compiler:          gcc version 3.3.3 [FreeBSD] 20031106
OS:          FreeBSD (i386) release 5.2-RELEASE

The crypto icons don't work when the preview pane is disabled. Selecting a message doesn't do the necessary check and update and even reading the message shows no change in the icons.

(this is using IMAP)

Confirmed with KDE 4.1.3 on Kubuntu Intrepid with a local folder. 

The question mark in the crypto icon row does not change to the appropriate value when a message is opened in a separate window. Selecting and deselecting the message in the list does not help. 

Crypto icons only work as expected once the preview pane is added to the layout again.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
